VS Ultimate X10 Laggy Preview with Hero 5 VBR Videos

Post by wcsd106 »

Hi All,

First off, thank you for providing this forum. I have been a lurker here for quite some time and usually find the answer to my problems right away. Unfortunately, this is not the case today, so I've registered in hopes that someone can help me find a solution to a problem I'm experiencing.

I produce and host a fishing channel on YouTube. Nothing professional, just a hobbyist level. Most of my videos are shot using multiple cameras. My main cameras, currently, are a Canon Vixia HF R30 and a GoPro Hero5 Black. I also have a Hero5 session that I use as well. I do all my shooting in 1080p. I've noticed that while editing and previewing clips in X10, I will, at times, experience a choppy and laggy playback. Usually pausing preview, waiting a couple of seconds, and then continuing will fix the lag issue but only for a few seconds.

Yesterday I noticed that this was only occurring when previewing video taken from my Hero5 (In this particular edit I had no footage from the session, but I assume it would have acted the same way) Having dealt with extremely laggy/choppy video previously I decided to try a fix. In early 2017, I needed to shoot a video but all I had with me was my Samsung phone. When I imported the video to X10, I had the same lag errors. I converted the video to CBR from VBR using a free app called Format Factory. Yesterday I decided to do the same thing with the clips from the Hero5 Black. As I suspected, the Hero5 clips I convered to CBR previewed perfectly.

So, herein lies my dilemma:

1. Is there any setting or update that will allow Videostudio Ultimate X10 to play nice with VBR video clips?
2. Are there any settings on the GoPro Hero5 that will allow me to shoot in CBR instead of VBR? (I realize this may be a question more suited for a gopro forum)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks & Happy New Year!

Hi Josh

There are no settings within Video Studio to force variable data rate to play better than constant.
You can use VS to render to a constant rate, as using a video converter.
Do you use Smart Proxy? that certainly helps with project playback.
Via preferences I always set resample quality to “best”

My own experience using MTS seemed to play better / easier using a Progressive frame rate rather than Interlacing. Yes that is different to the data rate, but Format Factory as far as I know converts to Progressive, does not use Interlacing.
The assumption that the data rate variable or constant is the issue may be correct but could be confusing as it may be the frame type rather than frame rate. Difficult to prove.

If you feel you do need to convert your video files or some of your video files, then if you provide the properties of the originals, then tell us what you are rendering to for your YT videos we may be able to advise.
Certainly, a constant frame rate “progressive” ”frame based” is better for the internet.

Some forum members do use GoPro and can probably advise on the camera settings or best recording options for YT.
But variable data rate is used to reduce the file size whilst retaining quality allowing more footage to be recorded. Personal feeling is that you will not be able to change that in camera.

Clear as mud
