I'm not quite sure I'm getting what you're trying to tell us Terry. Your last post said that while you had installed 1709 it didn't take and you still only showed 1703 installed. Are you now saying that it has finally updated to 1709?

If so, you also said (above) that you saw no change in the loading time. Then you concluded that 1709 seems worse than 1703. If you don't see any change in PSP's loading time then in what way does 1709 seem worse than 1703?

Since my last post I succeeded in installing 1709. (“Newly installed.”)

Overall 1709 seems slower than 1703.

Re Juergen’s suggested disabling of those Defender options I see no improvement (“...on a quick test”) .

Thanks for the clarification. We will be interested in hearing what the launch times are now for you with PSP and Win 10 1709 compared to what they were when they were acceptably fast with 1703. :-)

All tests using Win 10 v 1709. First ensured in Task Mgr that PSP 2018 (32-bit) was not already in the process list. Then left clicked the tray icon.

Test #1
-------
Gave up after 2 mins. TM showed it was already running. Then appeared after about a further 10 sec, say about 140 secs in total.
Clicked New. 8 sec to open dialog. Clicked Exit. 4 sec to close.

Test #2
-------
12 sec. New and Exit quickly responsive.

Test #3
-------
15 sec. Then almost immediately crashed with the by now familiar 'PSP...is closing' message.

Test #4
-------
15 sec. New and Exit quickly responsive.

Test #5
-------
15 sec. New and Exit quickly responsive.

Started additional major applications (Firefox and Excel 365, with a largish worksheet).

Test #6
-------
22 sec. New and Exit quickly responsive.

Disabled Windows Defender options 'Cloud—delivered protection' and 'Automatic sample submission' as suggested by Juergen.

Test #7
-------
21 sec. Then almost immediately crashed with the by now familiar 'PSP...is closing' message.

Re-enabled Disabled Windows Defender options.

Test #8
-------
23 sec. Then almost immediately crashed.

Test #9
-------
29 sec. New quickly responsive. Tempted to leave it running at this point, in case I actually need to USE it for anything other than testing! But instead closed and ran SysInternals Process Monitor to see if that could give any clues on next reload.

Test #10
----------
Over a minute. Didn't get exact timing because busy trying to control ProcMon. That generated a million entries and even after filtering to 350,000 to display only the process 'Corel PaintShop Pro.exe' there's a lot to study, 99% impenetrable to me. Later I'll try to upload all or parts, so that others with more technical expertise can scrutinise it.

Who knows, maybe even the Corel developers could take a look?

--------------------

So a definite deterioration on 1703. My '5 sec workaround' doesn't work now in 1709.

Probably re-install as next step, to see if I can at least eliminate these unacceptable crashes.

As I suspected, the ProcMon results were so overwhelming that I gave up attempting to distill any clues. But as promised I've uploaded four extracts as text files in case others can see anything possibly relevant to the issue under discussion. Most were chosen at points where there seemed to be thousands of repetitive operations. Note that the time stamps are shown near the extreme left.

One of the many puzzles is why there are hundreds or thousands of references to certain files. Some are JPGs, not recently edited to my knowledge. Others are even more obscure, such as files with extension HDP. These are temporary files generated by my video editor, Magix Movie Edit Pro. Totally unrelated to PSP. Go figure...

hartpaul wrote:terrypin in your screenshot have a look at Update History. I found that the 1709 update did not take immediately and the history showed 3 times that

Feature Update to Windows 10 , version 1709
Failed to install on 16/12/17

Eventually it did install when I chose the Update and Restart option but only when I was prepared for that install.
Thanks, that was eventually the method that succeeded. Although it hasn't made any improvement to my issues ;-(
