PSPro 2018 Ultimate Box/CD

Post by BikerDave1 »

I am waiting to receive my CD in the mail. I do not have any Trial or earlier version installed. I have looked through the threads and I just picked up one or two CD installs...the rest were from the stubs on the web. I have read to install both the 32&64-bit installs for whatever reason that was't clear. I want to install it right so the 64-bit app installs and runs properly before I start to use it.

I am seeking some advice from Users familiar with the CD install and if I should just use the link install (Trial) and then go with the Service Pack 1 (revised).

The CD version and download version both offer to install both the 64 and 32 bit versions, and indeed they say this is recommended. Why? Because a lot of filters out there are old and only work with the 32 bit version of PSP. So people with both versions can open their image in the 32 bit version, apply the 32 bit filter(s), and if they then want to do further editing taking advantage of the 64 bit architecture, they can save the filtered image in the x32 version, and then reopen it in the 64 bit version for further work.

You also need to be aware that many scanners out there don't have TWAIN drivers which work in a 64 bit environment. So if you scan a lot of pictures with such a scanner, and like the TWAIN interface, you will also need the 32 bit version of PSP. Mind you, the 64 bit version has an alternative Import from scanner option, which brings up a much more simple screen than the Advanced TWAIN screen, but this still works to get your images scanned and ready to use in PSP 64 bit.

If you don't have any old filters you want to install to work with PSP and scanning with TWAIN is not so important, then you can simply install the 64 bit version.

We normally don't recommend using the download trial version and activating it with a serial number to get the full version. In the past this has often caused problems. If you can be patient, wait to get your CD and install from that.

Thanks for the reply, Ken.

Q: Is it obvious which filters are 32-bit?

I'm not Ken, but it's not actually "obvious" which filters are 32bit versions only. But - if you have a large collection of plugins - or if most of the plugins you have were free or shareware - then the odds are that most of them are 32bit only. There are not very many plugins that have 64bit options available, and those that are available are, for the most part, both paid plugins and often relatively expensive. There are a few older, 32bit plugins that are still being supported by their creators who have added 64bit versions but they are few and far between. :-)

And further to Ken's answer, if I recall correctly the Trial version of PSP 2018 only allows installation of the 64bit version, not both 32bit and 64bit. If I am correct, then likely when you do get the CD (or download the full, paid version) you will have to uninstall the Trial 64bit version before the installer will allow you to install both the 32bit and 64bit versions of your purchased software. I do stand to be corrected as it has been some time since I went through that hassle. :-)

Just a comment for the 'experts'!!!!!

I have a number of programs on my computer/s. Mostly editing software. Plugins etc etc etc. None of them seem to make you jump through so many hoops as Corel does. Is it unique to Corel or have I just been lucky?

I havd all sorts of programs installed and yes, I tend to agree that Corel's approach is the least user friendly regarding installation - as well as ads - that I can recall.
