Raster layer problem

Post by jimbir »

I entered some text on my image. It was created on a vector layer and I could edit it as I pleased. I saved the image as a pspimage file and also as a Jpg file. I wanted to make some changes to the text so I opened the pspimage file. Now the text appears on a raster layer (I have no idea how this happened) and I can't edit it. Is there some way to get the vector layer that had the text on it back?
What would cause a raster layer to be created?
What are they used for? I try to stay with the background and vector layers because mt needs are very simple. :?

No idea how it could happen. PSD files will convert vectors to raster. I don't know about saving for older versions of PSPimage though. Did you change the compatibility settings? Only other things I can think of are 1) You didn't actually make it as a vector this time around and just didn't notice or 2) You performed a function on the wrong layer and it converted the text to raster.

No, you can't convert a raster back to vector text. Though you can use it as a template for recreating the look.

Thanks. As a test, I selected that raster layer and attempted to add some text. as soon as I clicked on the image, a vector layer was created. The same thing happens if I try to add text to the background layer. As I understand it, this is what is supposed to happen.

You could also do some tests : mak a new document or load a new image. Add some text and then save as pspimage. Close the images on the workspace and then reload the pspimage and see if the text is still there on a vector layer and also if you can still edit it. Repeat that a number of times and see if the problem repeats at any stage. Keep it simple to start with and then add do a little more til you are comfortable that PSP is behaving.

I would like to point out that while first creating text it always starts as a vector. But if "Create as" is set to Floating then once you approve the text it'll become a floating raster selection layer. So "Create As" must be set to vector if it's to remain a vector after editing.

OK, here's the help.
I created a new color image and added a line of text when I did that, vector layer 1 was created. I saved, the image as a PSP image file and closed it.I reopened the file and there was vector layer 1 and a background player. I added more text to vector 1 saved, closed, and reopened the file and everything was normal. I added a line of text on vector layer 2, saved, closed, and reopened the file and everything was a normal again. I copied an image from the web and pasted it on a new image. (On that image was both the background and a raster layer. Opening either one of those layers showed the same image.) I used the smart paintbrush selection tool and selected the subject that I had copied from the web. I CTRL C'd this and pasted it on the test image as a new selection. It showed up as a floating selection layer. I saved, closed, and reopened the image. All of the layers were present plus the floating selection layer. I pressed the N key to remove the marquee from around the floating selection and that layer immediately became a promoted selection. Saved, closed, and reopened the file and there was no change. I could not create a raster layer.
Since I've never had this problem before, all I can come up with is that there must've been some type of poltergeist that affected the image I'm having a problem with.
Thanks for the help. Jim

Thanks. I checked my image and text is set to be created as a vector.
