PSP2018 Installer download problem

Post by arturox »

G'day folks.
Purchased a new update copy of PSP 2018 today. (I have an older version installed X8).
The download link on the Cleverbridge final page after payment just downloads a link to something strange...

When I click it, it downloads "dwnld.paintshoppro.com-PSP2018_Pro.exe" whis is obviously not the PSP2018.exe as it's only 5Mb in size.

When that is clicked to run, it produces an error message thus:
"PaintShop Pro 2018 is already installed on your computer. Press "OK" to Quit the installation."

Yes indeed 2018 is, and it's a very old trial version... But what has that got to do with anything...
How do I, from where do I download the actual PSP 2018.exe installer?

Thanks

I would suggest uninstalling that old trial version and then use the clean up tool mentioned here:
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=52337

Then try the installer again accepting the recommended installation as some people find problems later when they install to different locations or install only the 64 bit version .

Oh dear!
Uninstall/cleanup is not an option, I was hoping someone would not come back with the obvious and objectionable answer. :(

I've paid the lolly, I now want a PSP 2018 actual installer download so I can put it somewhere safe on my external backup HD before doing any actual installing.

Thanks for the thought, even if I can't use it.

Next...

To make it clearer. When I purchased PSP2018 I received this file:
PSP2018_Ult.exe which was 5956 KB .
This was the installer downloader. While you have a version of 2018 on your drive (a trial version you said) then the downloader is fooled into thinking that you already have PSP 2018 installed and it will not continue downloading and overwriting the trial version.

That is why you must prepare a clean slate. If the trial is expired then it is probably useless on your machine and can be safely uninstalled.

This will then allow the installer to progress. After installation I finished with the program able to run (both 32 and 64 bit on my C drive and as well a folder:

psp2018_ult which was 443 MB and contained Setup folder and many mst and msi files which is probably the full version of PSP2018.

I don't know why Corel has taken this method as :
X9 was PSPX9_PF.exe at 350 792 KB
X8 was PSPX8_PF.exe at 296 483 KB

So PSP 2018 is using a different method for the first installation at least

Nope! Not uninstalling/cleaning anything until I have the required installer sitting in my machine.

I want an absolute download address, otherwise I think, unless a suitable (For me) solution arrives within a few days, refund time is coming in to view. :(

I don't permit anything to auto install on my machines without first seeing what it is, where it thinks mistakenly it's going to install itself (Not in Program Files).
Etc...
Thanks for your thoughts, appreciated.

Not to worry, I've worked around the toilet contents (s) and now have the "psp2018_pro.zip" on my computer, Stuff extracted from the .zip and ready to install, as I want, and where I want, and a backup of the file and other related files, invoice, install key etc. on the backup disk.

So I'm slightly mollified...

So I'm slightly mollified...
Taking a step backwards... And I ask...
I've paid my money, it has been accepted, I have an acceptance email, an Invoice, an installation key, so it is not for Corel to have some software device that will not let me download a new paid for copy on to a machine because it's already installed... Perhaps I have a satisfactory reason for doing it this way... It's non of their damn business. As long as I have a legit PSP It shouldn't matter to them that I have (Yes Really) Three or maybe four other installs of PSP on a machine... PSP 9, PSP x6, PSP X8 and 2018.

I have three computers all with paid for legit copies of PSP installed, I have now purchased three 2018 PSP updates for those three machines, but consider my problem, two of the machines are network connected, the third for reasons not discussable on an open forum has no connection what-so-ever with the network.

I therefore have no choice but to always download all the stuff for that computer using one of the others. (Transfer by USB stick).

Snaggy though... The Corel downloader says it is already installed and exits, and will not let me download, denying me the product I've paid for.

WHY?

Ax

Nb: Yes I know, if I wanted I could use one of the other downloaded installers on the Sans Network machine, because I really only need the key that came with my third purchase...
Not the point, I've paid for the product, I want access to download it.

Another point, some software companies allow a trial installation of their software but the trial is limited in some way (logo for some video programs, feature limitations for others) .

To have all the features you have to insert a licence token/ activation code, OR download and install over the top a complete version of the software (it automatically deletes / uninstalls older files) OR as in the case of Corel remove the trial version (which is usually an older version with some minor bugs) and then use a downloader to install the latest version.
This last by Corel has worked for a large majority any that have tried the trial and moved to the paid full version. I doubt that any customers have special rights to dictate to a software company how their installation should proceed .

Mmnnn!
I have a couple of apps installed that always uninstall the old version before installing the new update, BUT they don't prevent me from downloading the app in the first instance... 'Tiz only when I double click the installer that the process starts.

This is the first time in my 35+ years of using computers, I've had a purchased app refuse to download because an installed version already exists... (As Judge Judy would say. "Ridiculous").
Not forgetting the first time in all my time using PSP (Started when it was a little give away on magazine floppies, late 1990s) that I've encountered this problem.

The software company sell a licence to download and use their app. If you've paid the appropriate fee, they don't have any right to insist, because you already have the app, you can't download it again, nor can they insist you install it in Program Files on your computer or anywhere else for that matter. (Nothing in the EULA).

Yes they have the right to refuse to sell you a licence, but once they've accepted the payment and despatched the paperwork and the install code, a contract exists.
That requires the unfettered ability to download the purchase and install it where required... That a version of the purchase already exists on the machine is irrelevant to the new contract.

I tend to agree with you that, whether or not you have already purchased a licence and installed an app, if you purchase another license for the app then you have the right to download that app again. Corel has (IMHO) an obligation to provide a package of downloadable install files for those purchasers and shouldn't make it difficult for those purchasers to get that package.
arturox wrote:... nor can they insist you install it in Program Files on your computer or anywhere else for that matter. (Nothing in the EULA).
As there is nothing in the EULA then you should be able to install where you want - and I'm not sure that you can't change the install location using Corel's present method of installing the program - but do stand to be corrected. That said, however, they do have the right to deny support for those who install in a location other than the one recommended. While this might not apply to PSP, most of us has seen programs that, when installed in other than the recommended location, have some buggy behaviour due to it not being able to properly integrate with - for example - files written to the registry, etc. for certain operations. Remember, you're purchasing a licence, not a product outright.

Re: PSP2018 Installer download problem

I am sure there are quite a few of us here -- more than just me -- who have more than one version of PSP installed on the same computer. I have X7, X8, X9 and 2018 on this computer I am using right now, and similar numbers on other computers. They all work, and the by now not so new way Corel has found to install recent versions has never told me the latest version could not installed because an earlier version was already there. I also seem to recall that when you use the stub, it gives two options: to just Download, or Download and Install. As I understand it, people use the first option to first download everything and then later install it to where they prefer and not just where Corel otherwise dictates.

I am not querying the fact that you received this msg from the installation process. But if it is referring to the current version being already installed, and you have uninstalled the trial version as I think you said you had, then there is probably something in the Registry which still refers to the current version and thus blocks download and installation of the full version.

Hi Ken,
I suspect that your assumption "But if it is referring to the current version being already installed, and you have uninstalled the trial version " is incorrect.

I think the problem is from arturox's first post that he has:
1. Installed an older trial version of 2018 on his computer.
2. Trying to use the installer (5K ) to download the full program so he can port the installation files over to a non- internet connected computer and install it there.

Some of the confusion lies in that we have a preinstaller PSP2018_Ult.exe (5956KB) which when run first checks for an installed version of PSP2018 , before it offers the option of Download or Download and Install.
If it finds a previous installation (trial 2018) then it refuses to go further whereas it should at least offer the option to download to install later, on that computer (after of course uninstalling the trial) or on another computer .

Arturox has been asking for the installation file(s) which would be over 300 000 KB as in PSP X9 (350 792 KB)

The downloaded equivalent seems to be in a zip file psp2018_ult.zip (400 620KB) which extracts to a folder: psp2018_ult (444MB) containing 725 files in 69 folders. These files include many Dll files and a Setup Folder with .mst and .msi files . This is what is required to be able to carry over to install on a non internet PC computer.

Interesting replies folks.
For the most part you've hit the nail on the head because I'd moved on from my original posting to the final computer sans networking which was the last update I bought.

The computer on which I do the networking stuff already had the update installed so there was no way I was going to uninstall it just do download the final update for the sans network computer.

The second networked computer was the one with the trial still installed and was the start of this debacle.

As noted the pre-installer is the problem and once past that, it's just a .zip archive "psp2018_pro.zip" that's downloaded and can be moved anywhere before extracting .
In this instance Memory stick to Sans PC then extract.

There must be some muddled thinking at Corel that the method used is fit for purpose... I suppose if you are aiming at the photo snapper market maybe, but I would guess a lot of you guys, like me are not your average photo snapper...

Ax

PS: For Ken.
In my case I did not uninstall the trial so the pre-installer was carrying on as usual.

No worries Ken, appreciated you had some thoughts on the matter.

Guess I should be contacting Corel themselves... I must see about opening a support ticket, unless anyone has a better idea.

I do appreciate all the thoughts offered on this matter.

Anyway, now all three computers are updated to 2018.

Seasons greetings... :D
