PSP 2018 Raster Deform tool?

Post by arturox »

Just purchased PSP 2018...

Where the hell has the "Raster Deform" tool gone in PSP 2018, I cannot find it among the tools and I cannot find it among the Tools in Customize so I could put it back out front.

This was an important tool, so where is it?

If it has been ripped out WHY?

I can think of a number of tools that could be dumped and not missed, but not this one.

If it has been dumped, what do I use instead to do the same job?

Thanks
Arturox

I also notice the "Object Selection" tool has now completely vanished, and unlike X8 it cannot be hoiked out of the Unused tool... Because it ain't there anymore.

Why?

I believe it is supposed to be in the Pick tool, rubbish!

Deform Tool (Raster Deform Tool) - shortcut D : Use to rotatate resize skew and distort layers or images

Object Selection Tool - shortcut O : Use to select, move, resize, reshape and rotate vector objects.

Pick Tool - shortcut K : Use to select , move, resize, rotate layers and vector objects 2018

The Deform and Object Selection which had two different buttons and two different Shortcut keys have now been combined in the Pick tool.
Note that the O shortcut still works and with a vector object you can press the K and O keys alternately and although the tool bar options switch around the appearance on the image remains the same with a bounding box and rotation handle. You can still do Sheer changes by holding down the Shift key and clicking a corner node, and Perspective changes by holding down the Control Keys .
The Shift and Control keys together produce Free distortion.

Can you point out one thing you can do with the Deform tool or the Object Selection Tool that you are unable to do with the Pick Tool??

I would have no idea... All this alien business about combining a number tools into one tool is a concept thought of in Hell.
Or as friend of mine says. "Too many Ronalds running the show".

I come from the JASC PSP era with lots of tool buttons, and that's what I expect, so I really have no idea, or wish to swap tool buttons for key shortcuts or similar, that is so late 1980s not 21st century thinking.

If I wanted similar app, sans tool buttons I could use the Serif photo thing or even the PS Elements thing, I expect PSP to be tool button actionable and configurable.
Configurable being, tools still in the tool pool should I want them on a toolbar.

It is so damnably depressing... I suppose it won't be so long before they get rid of all the tool button...

Anyway, all that stuff and my now severe depression aside, I do thanks you for the list of keyshortcuts, much appreciated.

I found a bit of time this evening to have a play with this clunky method of doing things, and I think I've got it to work... Sometimes.

Nowhere near as reliable as having a Tool button that when clicked you knew exactly what it was doing.

Ah well, such is life these days, they've ripped the guts out of Firefox (57), I wonder what'll be ripped out of PSP next.

Does anyone have any ideas what's next on the clearout list?

Anyway, sorry for being in a grump, but I've been using PSP for a very long time and I get upset when I find what they've been doing to it.

Thanks again for the previous info.

An afterthought, but obviously in my case relevant...

Please, from where can I download a standard PSP 2018 Manual?

The only 2018 manual I've found so far is for Ultimate 2018, but I'm only using the standard 2018.

Thanks

They are one and the same. Nothing is different in the program between Ultimate and Standard. They are the exact same program.

And another way of thinking of your predicament is that :

If you worked on a vector layer - you were forced to choose the Object Selector tool or use shortcut O.
If you worked on a raster layer - you were forced to choose the Raster Deform tool or use shortcut D.

Now it does not matter whether you have a raster or a vector layer when you choose the Pick tool it automatically gives you the tool suitable for your layer.
If you have a raster layer the Pick Tool magically transforms to the Deform tool you were so familiar with.
If you were using a Vector layer then once again it automatically transforms to the Object Selector tool .

Automagically fantastic. Less to remember, less tools to clutter toolbar or do you like clutter?? :D :D

I don't doubt it's automagical to some folks... and I get what you are saying...

For me it is about...
Control, control, control... I must have control. Any app, or multi-purpose thing that decides what it thinks I want to do, is wrong, regardless, I want control, so clutter doesn't come into it. (Aside. You should see the Attic/Loft in my house for clutter)

Yes I know freaky, but there yuh' go, I guess we all have foibles of some sort...

Thanks
Ax

Nb. Also thanks to LeviFiction for the note about the manual. BTW there is a difference, Ultimate the app or manual has a naff cover.

In the case of whether you want to use the Deform tool or Object Selection tool there is nothing for you to decide, so the app isn't making any decision that you wouldn't have to make yourself. Deform only works on raster raster layers, so if you want to do what the Deform tool does you have no choice but to choose that tool. So the Pick tool IS that tool if you're working on a raster layer. Object Selection tool only works on Vector layers, so if you want to do what the Object Selection tool does then you would have to choose the Object Selection too. The Pick tool IS that tool when working with a vector layer. In other words, if you need to use either of those original tools, then selecting the Pick tool IS that tool depending on whether you have a vector or raster layer.

If you're reading the manual to learn stuff then I doubt that the cover provides any useful information, It could come with a plain brown paper bag cover and the relevant information imparted by the manual would be exactly the same. :-)

Mmnnn!
Why then do they sell PSP as two different versions and two different prices, never understood that?

Look for yourself . this link is in a sticky post near the top comparing the number of brushes to identify if you have installed all.
It shows a comparison between the standard and ultimate versions. Compare and make up your own mind why the "different" versions/ prices and the extras.

Thanks for the link, interesting list.

I see four items different, personally I don't need any of them.

Thanks
