Adding text to highlighted menu item

Post by Snowski »

Hi all,

Quick, and probably easy question:

I want to accomplish the following. I have say 6 video fragments in my DVD menu. Each time a certain video is selected, I not only wat a Highlight Icon to appear (no problem) but also some extra text.

This text could for instance explain what the video is all about, etc. Now when you go to the next video, the text will automatically change.

Can this be done?

Many thanks in advance for all your help! :D

Yes, it can be done. You make an identical menu screen for each title, except you add your text, as appropriate. From your main menu, you go to the individual menu and you adjust your playlist so that clicking on the same title starts it playing but clicking on any of the others transfers you to that menu. This will look seamless.

What Devil is saying is similar to the "Roll Over" Effect, but it will require two button pushes -- the first to go to the menu with the explanation, and then the 2nd to actually play the selection.

The "Roll Over" Effect tries to simulate you navigating to a menu button, and it automatically gives you more info for that button (without having to push it). This is done with "Auto Activate" buttons, and it's described here in the tutorial "Roll-Over Effects Using Auto-Activating Buttons"

Not sure how much text you want to put in there, but if it is relatively short, you could use invisible text that will appear when it is selected via the highlight. The different texts can't overlap, since they are essentially buttons. This will prevent the time lag between screens that is seen in the above solutions.

Hmmm...no lag would be perfect.

But I will have to change my layout if the invisible texts can not overlap. I am used to use Adobe Encore, where you can make layers with text invisible or visible....and this way, texts could overlap. I have not found a way yet in DVD Workshop to accomplish the same.

Pauley,

Can you explain this dumb*ss here how I can get "invisible text to appear when selected" ?
I'd like to have the button change color, as usual, then some text also appearing next to it, kind of like a hint box.
I understand the multi-menu explained in this thread and the roll-over effect, but you seem to talk about another way.
Or are just thinking about text buttons?

Thanks Daniel, coz I would like to know how to do this as well...! ;)

I thought I knew, and tried it, but to no avail. Thanks to Daniel (or someone else) in advance for a small step-by-step guide...! :D

Create your text menu buttons.
Select the Text buttons
With the 'Text' tab selected, choose the Attributes radio button.
Change the Transparency to 99% (100% not possible)
Now, when the button is selected/rolled over, it will highlight. (Set the highlight color in the 'Style' radio button).

Note, a similar trick can be done with pics that have transparency.
