Disable Popup Ads (Spam from Video Studio?)

Post by dodald »

I've paid for VSX10 (and several previous versions), and I don't mind so much the popups that appear when I open Video Studio, but please, there must be a way to disable these pop-up messages on my desktop from Video Studio.

This user has the same problem, but from PaintShop:

me too. The ads (for the latest versions of video studio and Paintshop) appear when the browser is 'off', so this isn't the usual browser ad thing, probably code embedded in VS to go get the Corel ads separately. Irritating as hell, does nothing for the brand and pisses off the user. I just click them off with curses

The lions roar for any solution that works to turn these off

I found this thread in the forum
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 6&p=347163

And on experimentation - x10 gives options, X9, X8 don't. Whilst doing this an ad for paintshop popped up. errk. Paintshop X6 falls between cracks - there are solutions for x5 and prior, and x7 onwards but not x6. So I've used the CUH item listed in one post - just re-named it to CUH_PUP, and we will see what happens next.

Edit update Sun Nov 26
Didn't work - still got the ad pop-up, and also a blank (black) screen for a few seconds - obviously when the CUH code could not be found/executed. Renamed the cuh item back to original.

I don't mind getting one on close but getting 1/2 dozen pop-ups everyday (like clockwork) it's getting beyond irritating...

And from every product I own, from Painter to CDX8 to VS ... SHEESH!

Nothing like buying a program with no way to opt-out... Sad..

Hi

Did you read the post, link provided by David above, in particular this reply regarding Task Scheduler

http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 63#p346319

Otherwise you could disable each program via your Firewall

You will not receive update notifications but can do that manually accessing the Corel site.

Yes I Tried the workaround but, it still tries to find something then, flashes up a quick dos window (and minimizes quickly to the same corner where the ad would appear (tried taking a screenshot but) and then the PC freezes up with a an empty black box where the ad would usually be. And then after, the only way to un-freeze it is to hit the power button for 10 secs and hard restart everything.

This is beyond annoying.

And Like I said, I get them from each program I own & use on a daily basis
Corel Video Studio X8 & X9
Corel Draw X8 suite
Corel Photo Paint X8
Corel Painter 2015

And again, it never really used to bother me this much until the day before Thanksgiving. That's when it seemed to go off the deep end and now instead of just throwing up an ad at PROGRAM's close or the usual 7am push, now, It literally pops up from every single program listed above in roughly 60min intervals, even while you are working in the program on top of every time you close any Corel program.

FWIW I also started getting them from Cyberlink, starting last week. So far, renaming the CUH folder has removed the Corel messages for me, at least, without getting any DOS-type screens appearing. But as others have commented elsewhere, when you reinstall a Corel program or install a new one or new version, a new CUH folder is created and the process starts all over again.

I know... I love their products ... despite their nickel & dime tactic's.

I still have original WindowGrafx Webtricity CD's sitting around here somewhere...

Yeah I been doing this for awhile now... LOL

Hi all,

So I have had enough of these annoying ads / spam that are popping up all the time and did a search for a solution and ended up finding alot of users complaining about this "popup" style take over.

The issue should be easy to solve as there is a menu located under Help / Message Preferences that you can opt out of everything. One issue - After opting out of all messages and update notifications and closing VS X10, the very first thing that appears is another popup ad. Surely that is just TTP...

Is this spam actually just setup to keep being displayed? Who is the exec / Coder that thought this was a good idea? Do you guys read the feedback from users?

What I find interesting is that one of the very first messages on this forum is "We operate a very strict anti-spam policy. Anyone found spamming will be expelled immediately and offending posts deleted...". This is the same policy I and many others adhere to as well. So I am looking at alternatives to VideoStudio now and it is the spam ad popups that have triggered me to do this.

What do we need to do? Start a class action or petition online to get them to stop this practice?

I hope Corel read these messages and come to their senses and stick to email ads / update notices and remove the spam pop-ups from within the corelupdater software as I will drop all their software and support shortly.

Cheers,

D.

Hi sifudean

There was another post regarding Ad Popups
Please read this post……
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 63#p346319

I also contacted Corel Support who gave the same details as:-

1. Open up a run prompt by holding down the windows key on your keyboard + the letter "r"
2. Type Taskschd.msc and press ok.
3. Once the Task Scheduler app appears highlight the Task Scheduler Library Folder towards the top left.
4. The box on the right will show you what programs have scheduled tasks.
5. Locate the Corel tasks, there should be two of them and right click on each
6. Choose delete
7. Close the window.
8. Restart the computer

In the many earlier discussions of this subject, the one I use (regularly) is to go to C:\Users\[YourName]\AppData\Roaming\Corel\Messages and delete everything there. I say 'regularly' since the folder gradually gets new messages in it, so needs to be cleaned every so often. I go there each time I get a new pop-up.

Anyway, I have just implemented the Taskschd.msc option set out by Trevor in the preceding post, and will see what happens.
