Video Studio x8: Can i retrieve a wiped project?

Post by bubbs »

Hi.

I've been an idiot. I had finished a long project I was working on and saved it under the name 'Months of the year' but hadn't formatted it to a video file yet as I normally do.

A while later I started on another project but when I went to save it I accidentally saved it under the project name 'months of the year' and so wiped that project by replacing it with this later project i'd started.

Is there a way of reversing that save action and retrieving my 'months of the year' project?

Or is it gone for good? :(

Would very much appreciate if someone could help me as it will be many hours of work wasted otherwise.

Know the feeling, think most of us have had similar experiences.

My solution is to rewind the system to a previously saved image. Just before the fateful action would be perfect, or as close to on the "right side".

Do you have automatic backup available? You may find that gives you what you need.

Sure others will have different solutions - lets see.

The Windows "Restore" option is unlikely to help you as it does not change any data files . going back to a restore point changes system and program files but not your data

The fact that you say you were able to save another file with the same name without getting the "this file already exists" message means you *MAY* have saved the second project to a different folder . there is no problem in having two files of the same name in different folders it is possibly worth a search of your computer

So unless you have an automatic backup (something I would never be without) I do not think there is much hope of recovering your previous project

Thank you for the replies. Yes it looks like I'm going to have to re do the project.

You're right BJC, should always have a backup and sometimes with very long projects I do do that, but as this one was not so long I didn't. I certainly will in future!

Hmmm

Long shot

Go to file, at the bottom of the list are the last three project
If you have named the project slightly differently, then maybe???

Hi BJC

Thanks for the clarification regarding the Restore Point not affecting data. As far as I know, that is correct.

There is a difference though from a Windows Restore Point and a previously saved image of a HDD.

So, depending on where the OP saved the now overwritten VSP, the original file may be available through re-instating the HDD to the state it was in prior to the overwriting action occurring by using a previously saved image.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, we all know how useful it is. Version control (and plenty of HDD capacity) is also useful.
