Can't use the "New" or "Template" dialogues
Hi.
(I purchased the orginal Jasc shareware version somewhere around 1996 and I've been using PSP 9 until just recently)
I purchased the PSP ultimate package yesterday and I'm having a strange problem. I can open files and manipulate them, but I can't use the "New..." or the "Template..." buttons without PSP crashing. I can't use "new" from the file menu, either.
I always get two indentical instances of the error message dialogue "Corel Paint Shop Pro (x64) has stopped working"....one about two seconds after I press "close program" on the first error message.
Event Viewer records three errors each time
1- a .NET Runtime error....
Application: Corel PaintShop Pro.exe
Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
Exception Info: ***.InteropServices.COMException.......
2 - Two identical Application Errors that show at the same time
Faulting application name: Corel PaintShop Pro.exe, version: 20.0.0.2, time stamp: 0x59ce3586
Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 10.0.16299.15, time stamp: 0x4736733c
Exception code: 0xe0434352....
I've tried
- Windows Update repair tool
- Clearing all Windows and Internet caches
- Clearing Corel caches
- .Net Framework repair tool
I haven't reinstalled the package yet...hoping for suggestions.

Re: Can't use the "New" or "Template" dialogues
Here are requirements:
https://www.paintshoppro.com/en/product ... tech-specs
But you will need a *fully updated* Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7.
Especially fully updated IE & .Net Framework.
EDIT: I don't know why programmers at Corel still depends on IE core that is very slow to start. It is used too much in PSP and takes performance down..

Re: Can't use the "New" or "Template" dialogues
Did you just mis-type the version number in the line I quoted? The latest PSP 2018 update should update PSP to version 20.2.0.1. Before that update the "New" file open did, I believe, create issues. You can get the update patch from Corel's site here:JoeyCanuck wrote:Faulting application name: Corel PaintShop Pro.exe, version: 20.0.0.2, time stamp: 0x59ce3586

Have you tried resetting PSP to default by holding down the Shift key as you start the program by double clicking the desktop icon

Um, no I don't think so. ;] I used the update tool you provided and it responded that I was up to date. I just purchased it the other day.JoeB wrote:Did you just mis-type the version number in the line I quoted? The latest PSP 2018 update should update PSP to version 20.2.0.1. Was it you who suggested the shift/click new button solution in another thread? If I hold down shift while clicking "new" it'll create a new file, but it doesn't work if I shift/click "template"....I'll get the same error then.

Re: Can't use the "New" or "Template" dialogues
You should re-check the version number of your PSP by going to Help>About in the menu. The version number will be on the screen that opens. There is something wrong if the version number you see is as you posted it and not as I posted it.JoeyCanuck wrote:Um, no I don't think so. ;] I used the update tool you provided and it responded that I was up to date. Re: Can't use the "New" or "Template" dialogues
Actually, you just kind of dropped into the thread JoeB. Since I purchased within the last week, why shouldn't it be 20.2.0.2?Did you just mis-type the version number in the line I quoted? The latest PSP 2018 update should update PSP to version 20.2.0.1.
[edit] Whoops...I spoke too soon. Let me check that.

Re: Can't use the "New" or "Template" dialogues
That's what it says in event viewer: Faulting application name: Corel PaintShop Pro.exe, version: 20.0.0.2,
Under "About" in the program, it's 20.2.0.1
What is the significance of this?

Re: Can't use the "New" or "Template" dialogues
I don't know what the significance of that discrepancy is, I'm afraid. But at least "About" shows that you do, in fact, have the correct version. Somebody else might be able to explain why the event viewer indicates a different version number and whether or not that is actually significant. It may not be.JoeyCanuck wrote:That's what it says in event viewer: Faulting application name: Corel PaintShop Pro.exe, version: 20.0.0.2,
