slow rendering in Boris
In Boris I created a title that bursts into smoke, but when I play it in my timeline, it never plays all the way through. The audio keeps playing, but the video freezes. I have 16 gigs of RAM, and a reasonably fast video card, and I'm editing with everything shut off in the bg. It makes it hard to judge whether something works when you can't watch it in real time. I know it will render when I save the finished video, but I'd like to see it before then.

Re: slow rendering in Boris
First of all, Boris is a very resource hungry app. as are most fx filters and the like.
You have not stated what type of video you are applying the title to, or what video card is installed
Your computer, by todays standard is very slow, being what, 5-6 years old and a relatively low performing system, but probably sufficient for programs available at the time, but programs have become more high tech and rquire considerably more computer resources now.
If you are using HD video, do have have Smart Proxy enabled, provide us with a bit more information and we may be able to assist further

Try turning off the GL Mode:
Preview>Open GL Mode>Off to assist render speed.
It may help.
