AVI captured through MiniDV won't play

Post by Matt8890 »

I have captured some old Mini DV tapes using Videostudio X10 on a windows 10 64bit OS and the DV type 2 format, Type 1 fails with a corrupt file message
When I insert the video on the track and press play the clip will play with no sound, I can start and stop it and as long as I don''t go back to the start the video will play without sound
When I move the mouse back to the start of the clip, there is a tiny pop of sound. When I press play the video will no longer play however the soundtrack will
I can move the mouse back and forth along the track but the video won't play at all, audio will
Splitting out the audio does not resolve this
If i render the clip and then play it back in Media Player for example I get the first frame and no sound
If I capture in a range of DVD MPG2 formats within Video Studio I do not have this problem
The file format reads as Microsoft AVI file - Open DML with a compression of DV Video Encoder - Type 2
Any ideas on what is happening here, I haven't been able to find anything on this
The Camcorder is a Sony DCR TRV 22 in NTSC format
Thanks
Matt

After further diagnosis I can get the clip to play again without sound, if it is selected (has orange border around it). If I then move the scrubber to a different part of the clip, the clip automatically becomes unselected and the video stops playing and the audio starts
I can do this as many times as I like and the result is the same
So I can play the video and the audio but not together
Adding the clip to the library and previewing from the monitor window will only play the video and no audio no matter where you move the scrubber in the monitoring window
THis Type 2 format uses PCM as its audio encoding

Using a different capture tool like WinDV and then importing into VideoStudio, renders the same result video or audio but not both together

First off, can you confirm that you captured the video using your Sony's iLink/Firewire port using a 4 pin to 6 pin Firewire cable to a Firewire port on your computer? That is the only correct way to capture DV video. Using a USB connection will at best only result in streaming-quality video.

If you do have a Firewire capture set-up and are experiencing this problem, then why not use the DVD-compatible mpeg-2 you can successfully capture. Admittedly, editing DV/AVI is easier, but in the end you usually have to convert to mpeg-2 in any case to burn a DVD. Moreover, mpeg-2 takes up far less space than DV (which takes about 13GB for an hour of video).

Again, depending on your having a Firewire connection, you may need to roll back the DV driver that came with Win 10 to a legacy driver. See the links in this post for instructions on how to do that. http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 88#p345188

Matt, are these DV's SP or LP ?
If they are LP is that TRV22 record them?

HI Thanks for your ideas, I am using Firewire and have a difference between the quality of AVI and MPEG 2
I have resolved the problem by installing K-Lite's Codec pack http://www.codecguide.com/configuration ... rsion=1360
I suspect it either fixed or added codecs I didn't have
Thankfully i can now use all the AVI capture I've done without redoing it as MPEG2
