Importing DVD files
I've inherited a DVD of material (about 3.5Gb) on using a camera to take video ("camera hints') and I want to add some extra material to it, create a menu to play various parts, and burn a new DVD. However, I just don't have the original project file for the DVD: all I have is the Video_TS folder and its various VOB, BUP, and IFO files.
How can I import the video files from the DVD to VS so I can structure my planned result? And would that process degrade the resolution of the result?.

Hi David
Read this web page that explains the Insert Digital Media process, saves me typing the details.
http://lata.me.uk/corel/importdvd/dvd.htm
Once you have the files on the timeline you can treat like any other project.

Re: Importing DVD files
Thanks for the tips to start. I experimented a bit and since I have the video_ts folder on hdd, I find I can import from there without the usual disk player delays. However, whoever created the disk had no titles (one reason I want to do the menu thing), just a lot (20+) of chapters. Can I choose to import selected chapters? I read somewhere on the forum that importing vob files also works, but cannot find where.
FYI, an image of the video_ts folder attached.

Re: Importing DVD files
Hi David
Yes you can import the Chapters, very strange that there is not at least one Title, as Chapters are associated with titles
If you import both Titles and Chapters you will get duplicate video files, just something to check.
Are you sure the first clip is not a title?
I guess the choice of Titles or Chapters depends on how the DVD was first created.
And yes if the Video TS folder is already on the hard drive the import process is the same.
Make sure you select the Video TS folder and not the individual Vobs

Re: Importing DVD files
Ok, went a little further this time, and tried to:
- import a vob file. Had to rename a copy of it to mpg first, but after that X10 import to the timeline was OK, but the clip play was jerky to start. But otherwise, apparently playable, albeit scratchy to start. That might have been due to the original recording process, which apparently was straight off a TV broadcast. But decided to follow the import digital files route further.
- importing the digital media from the video_ts folder on hdd gave this image of the disk files: and it turns out that the chapter 2 selected in this image is actually the disk title: what its all about. However, this is as far as the import went. As you can see from the action buttons at the bottom of the image, there's no where to go now. The start import button is greyed and non-functional. I tried selecting the title thumbnail as well a a range of chapters, but nothing would make that start import button active.
My plan was to import a chapter or chapters on a specific topic, work those over in VS and create a new mpg, and repeat until all the disk chapters have been done. Any suggestions of how to actually import (selections needed to get the action button 'alive') would be appreciated.

Re: Importing DVD files
David -- I have to say that after all this time here, I am astonished that you remain unaware of this process... Sigh!!
In the image you posted, look up into the top left hand corner of each of those thumbnails. You should see what looks like a greyed-out box. But in fact, you can left click in those to select which of the videos you want to import. That is the only "secret" which has been available on this Board for I don't know how many years...

Re: Importing DVD files
As shown on page 48 of the user guide you need to select whatever clips you want to import - as Ken says you need a tick in each of the little boxes

Re: Importing DVD files
I presume you are aware of the "Select All" icon on the top line of the Import screen. It is a "film" icon with a tick in the section nearest the zoom control. You have Select All, Cancel Selection and Invert Selection to choose from.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Re: Importing DVD files
Have been away for a week - on a bravo music cruise no less, sailing the seas (Sydney to New Caledonia and back) with orchestras/small groups and solo artists doing performing arts music all over the ship, all day: fantastic. But, to the topic . .
Ken, Trevor
haven't had much cause to work with importing DVD's, mainly with burning them. And have never wanted to import just one part of a DVD before. So, did not know that little trick. You learn something new every day. But noted in working it that the scratchy bit I mentioned earlier seemed to have gone away/been cleaned up as part of the chapter import process.
Thanks, all.

Re: Importing DVD files
Hi David
A standard DVD holds 4.3gb of data
Mpeg2 type video is used to burn the disc, converted to vob files.
Each vob being 1gb in size, details will show slightly over 1gb, 4 at 1 gb with the last vob making up the remainder.
5 vobs in all to fill the disc.
If we simply use titles then those will show when importing the disc to vs.
If we have added chapters, then those will show in addition to the titles.
The titles hold the entire movie as does the chapters.
So if we choose to import both titles and chapters we will duplicate the movie, effectively giving us copies of the movie.
Of course that can be confusing.
I generally select titles only, but I guess the movie menu structure may determine my choice.
I would not choose both, one or the other.
Using the import option is simular to copy and paste, we transfer the files to the pc without recoding.
What we have on disc is what we get, same quality
