can't open file

can't open file
Hi. I'd created a couple of pspimage projects in x9. Now I've installed Pro 2018 and I'm not able to open my files. Neither in Pro 2018 nor in X9. X9 crashes while opening a file and Pro 2018 tells: Unable to open the file. Please verify that the file is valid.
WTF?!
I wroter this forum and obviously its not just my problem. Anybody know how to fix the files?

Re: can't open file
I would recommend calling Corel to see if they can offer support. It sounds like the file is corrupted, and that can happen for any number of reasons. Or there is an unexpected scenario they had not planned on and the best way to know that is to ask them.
There are no repair tools that I know of, and I'm not aware of anyone with an intimate knowledge of the file format. The last time they released any documentation on the file format was, I think, version 8 or 10. So they are quite old. And we would need to know exactly what we were looking at to see what was corrupted and know if it's even possible to correct or if the file is just gone.
The last time this came up I don't think we found a good solution. I was able to grab the edit history of the image, with the potential of creating a script from it. They didn't take me up on that offer. But to know if that's even possible I'd have to see the PSPImage file and see if the history is all there and what it requires to re-create.

Thx for quick response. I supposed that there is no solution but hoped anybody know a trick. With the file history would be one, but don’t bother, its not worth so much trouble. I won’t use x9 anymore...

Re: can't open file
That's up to you but it's really not that hard. If you open up the file in something like Notepad or Notepad++ there will be a whole lot of gobbledy-gook but there will also be a section of XML. From there you just need to remove the tags, replace the HTML versions of the newline and return carriage symbols with actual newlines and return carriages (easily done with Find & Replace) then add in the appropriate symbols (parentheses, brackets, colons, etc.) and the script is made. I'm actually working on a script that would do this for me. Hoping to finish it by the end of the week.

Re: can't open file
Possibly when right click on X9 PSP format files and select default program as X9- no reason those files shouldn't open back up in X9. Irfanview's plugin pack will read PSP files, i would try converting them to PSD format if you want your layers, if not just tiff or jpeg. When you save to the PSD (Photoshop) format, the image maintains raster and adjustment layers, but vector layers and art media layers are converted to raster layers.
Corel needs to fix this compatibly issue for PSP format files- it's a real detriment to upgrading. I'd message them their Facebook page- they usually respond faster than Corel website- https://www.facebook.com/corelpaintshop/

Re: can't open file
Out of curiosity, I had some old psp format files from PSP X2 and I was able to open them in PSP X9.

Re: can't open file
I think it was generally accepted that older version pspimage files were compatible in later versions of PSP but later versions could not be opened in earlier versions. This seems to have applied up to PSPX7 which will not open pspimage files from X8, X9 or 2018.
However X8 will open files from X9 and 2018 and X9 will open files from 2018.

Re: can't open file
One last note- it helps to make frequent backups of your files to an external hard drive or to the cloud in the event of any possible file corruption- which may or may not be your situation.
