Issues when burning blu ray discs

Issues when burning blu ray discs

Postby yuritorres10 » Mon Oct 16, 2017 4:42 am

Good day everyone, I would like to share some problems I got after burning blu ray disc in videostudio X8 and X10. In the first (X8) I frequently got "unspecified error", not all the time but it happened to me frequently. Now I updated to X10, I've juste created my first blu ray disc and was almost perfect, a little issue between some chapters, they were suppose to play continuously. My disc has 4 chapters, the first three chapters play continuously but the 4th one doesn't play unless i go back to the main menu and select the 4th chapter. My questions: Is this a problem related to especific menus in videostudio ?, or it's related to my blu ray player ?

I've had no issues burning a Bluray disk from X8 with a menu and at least 4 items on it. Not tried it from x10. It would be unlikely that the blu-ray player in the computer or the home entertainment system is faulty here. If it plays one, it will play them all. So the problem is likely to be the way you have set up the VS disk burn options.

However, several questions about how you go about this:
1. Do you use the burn to disk image option in the disk burn panel (step 3)? This creates an .iso file of the disk, which you can open with a player that reads iso file, like the free VLC package. A handy way to check the result before you burn a disk. When I stared making disks, I found that nearly every disk I tried to make had some small error (volume, music item for menu, overlooked spelling error in title etc) that effectively wasted the disk - yet another coffee coaster. Using the disk image approach allows you check all these little things and fix any problems (make change, burn new image and check) before committing to burning a result (main tool bar at the top, Tools\Burn from disk image (ISO).
2. Have you set up the disk play options correctly? See this item in the disk burn preferences (for a DVD disk, but its the same for a bluray disk)
VS X9 clip play sequence.jpg

Here, you can set up to play each item straight thru, or return to menu after each one item is finished playing. Choose from the drop down list. Comment: I like the return to menu method because it allows a viewer to choose when or even if to play the next item.

Experiment with these options using the disk image approach before choosing one to use in the 'real' disk.

Hi yuritorres10

If you are having issues in using the burner module, whatever they may be, than you should modify your workflow.
You should convert / render your project to a compliant video file.
Then use that new video file to burn to disc.

You could render your project to 4 separate / shorter files, adding those to the burner will create a Title menu containing 4 links.
You may find that a better option than using Chapters.
Please read these notes regarding a recommended work flow.
http://lata.me.uk/corel/all.htm

As for Chapter Menus not playing correctly, I think the problem has been raised before.
The search features of the forum are a little difficult to use, so far I have not found other posts.
But sure the guys would recommend a different workflow.

One thing I have hesitated to suggest is file size of the rendered result for the disk. Particularly given your use of blu-ray disks which I assume are the normal 25Gb variety. However
- if you are rendering in HD (reasonable assumption given your choice of disk format)
- and the files are large (bear in mind that an HD file is typically double and may be 4x the size of the same file in mpg2 format (DVD))
- then a composition plus menu such as you outline that gets the size of the disk (the green bar) into the yellow or red zone of the disk (see here)
VS X9 Share burn panel menu 1A.jpg

will give you an error in the last item. Which you did report.

If this is the case, then a resolution reduction will help squeeze it all in on one disk. Or maybe, choose a simple menu rather than a smart one (lower menu size on disk).

Thanks for your replies. My case is very strange, within my last 5 blu-ray discs burned, I succeeded only two. This is how I work: I first converted my mts files into m2ts formats using h264 blu-ray 20 mbps. I used 4 medias in order to get 4 separate chapters. Then, I create a project file, nothing in the timeline, I go directly to share to create my blu-ray disc, then I create a motion menu (4 chapters for my 4 medias), then I select the burning options (4X speed, delete temporary files, H264 blu-ray 20 mbps). I would like to know what is wrong. Why I get UNSPECIFIED ERROR ?

I'm not sure why you bothered doing that since the mts files would already have been Blu-Ray compliant, and most likely already produced using the H.264 AVCHD codec, though they possibly could have been BD-compliant mpeg-2. Either way, the extra conversion was probably unnecessary.

Then, I create a project file, nothing in the timeline

This is where I become even more lost. How exactly do you create the project file, and where: in the Edit module or Burn module? And which timeline are you talking about: the Edit timeline or the Burn timeline?

Hi Ken

I assume yuritorres10 has 4 separate projects then rendering each projects to Avch264.
To create a project file I assume doing File New Project, then Share Disc Bluray.
yuritorres10 can you confirm the process you are using?

yuritorres10
From the last page of the burner module choose to create a Bluray Folder, deselect Create to Disc
That will save the folder to your hard drive.
Do not select Normalize Audio.
Press Burn
Important that the process should start with Convert Title
Convert Title does not render the files avoiding the “Temporary Files”

Do you see any error messages.?

Burning a Bluray Folder will avoid creating coasters.

Thanks Trevor, yes I have 4 separate projects, edited and rendered in H264 blu-ray 20 mbps each one. Then in order to burn a blu-ray, I create a new project file only to use the burn module (Share). Within the burn module, I put my 4 medias, then create a smart menu, and finally burn (option H264 blu-ray 20 mbps), I also select <delete temporary files>. When burning, it only convert the menu, because the 4 medias are already MPEG compliant. At the 99% burning process, frequently I get UNSPECIFIED ERROR. Thanks for your replies or advises

Hi
I do not know why some fail whilst others are ok?
Do you choose to create a Bluray Folder, if that process does not fail then the problem could be the actual disc type, just a thought?
After creating a Bluray Folder I use Image Burn http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn the folders do disc. At least that takes Video Studio out of the equation and avoids creating those coasters?????

Thanks a lot Trevor, I am gonna follow your advice by creating a BD folder and then burn disc image. I'll give you news soon. You may prepare a tutorial in youtube about this topic :)

Hi
Ken Berry is the one to thank, indeed he was using this process well before I burnt my first Bluray.
The main problem is having the media player that will play the folder including the menu structure, not all play the menu?
Although we can play the video in the Stream folder to check quality.

I am using Corel Win DVD, its an older version that supported the folder, not sure if the latest version does.

Burning SD DVD uses a similar process but create an Iso file and we can play using VLC media player
Then burn to disc using Burn from Disc Image, saves on burning those coasters.
Nowadays Ken has stopped burning discs but renders to a video file to play via USB / Hard Drive direct onto the tv.

Thank you for your assistance Trevor and Ken. Finally I solved the problem following the instructions you provided to me. Instead of creating BDMV folders I just created an ISO file from the burning module (Inside Videostudio). Then I tested the quality with PowerDVD 18 and finally I burned the ISO file using Power2go. I am happy with the results. Thanks again !
