Can it be done?

Post by RobertdB »

Can you change the color of the background only, when in the foreground you have complex objects like trees with leaves, or people with hair, or animals with fur or feathers?
When it can be done using one or more of the selection tools, can you please show me the settings :)

Is the image you posted the actual pixel size of the image you are trying to work on? If the image you are trying to work on is larger then you should post it on a site that allows posting large images so that people can download the actual size to determine what method works best. The smaller the image the more difficult it is to isolate complex objects from the background.

thanks for your reply JoeB. Unfortunately it's not my picture, so I can't share the full size file. It was just meant as an illustration of the question I have.
When you have complex shapes, how to make a decent selection?

So i split the channels into RGB and used the blue channel to create a mask layer.

Often a good idea if you are trying to separate out something that is predominately one colour. in this case green.

Adjusted the contrast so i basically had a silhouette

Then i loaded it as a new mask layer
(Click the image below to view the transparency)

and put in a new background

It's important to realise that there is not just one technique. It depends on the image.
