Can't split at first or last frame, WHY?
I never noticed until the other dy...
was editing on a pair of similar layers but for them to sync properly I needed to cut either the very first or last frame of either clip but, I notice that when I choose either clip I can split and delete anywhere on timeline with exception to the actual first or last frame... I can move to the first or last frame but the split function stays grayed out...
Is it supposed to be this way by design? If not then how do you split & delete the first or last frame
...As a work around I tried doing the time stretch but option but that just makes a mess of the entire clip...

Unable to duplicate your problem I'm afraid
Can you clarify what you mean by 'split function' do you mean the scissor icon
as you can see from by attachment I am ready to split the first frame and the scissors are still active

Re: Can't split at first or last frame, WHY?
I think it depends on the file type and compression type. Most compressed video files are not isolated frames; they are tied in groups where a number of frames inside the group are made up of the first frame and neighbor frames. I suspect if your file is this type of compression, you cannot separate the first frame from its group. There are some compression video files with isolated compressed frames and these type of files should be able to be cut at the first frame (examples are MJPEG, and All I-frame compression).

Re: Can't split at first or last frame, WHY?
Hi
Like the other replies I am unable to replicate the cuts
No problem in removing one frame from the ends of my video clips, tried using a variety of types.
I add my video to the top timeline, press “F” on the keyboard moves the curser by one frame, scissors and Split Clip is available.
Same effect when cutting last clip, “D” moves one frame back.
What are the properties of your video?

The Split is not available until you select the clip you want to split.OBB wrote:I never noticed until the other dy...

Are you sure you have selected the clip? Selected clip should have a orange border.

While trying to cure a problem with proDAD Scripting I saved the above linked clip. Can trim the first frame, but cannot trim the last frame at 0.0.17:24, it jumps to 0.0.17.23 using the one frame back arrow. Pulling the CTI manually to 0.0.17:24 the scissors(split clip) are grayed out.

Re: Can't split at first or last frame, WHY?
Yes the clip is selected, I'm not that dense...
The problem file/clip was originally an old animated .gif I made years ago, was making a simple live wallpaper for my phone... At first, when it wouldn't cut the first frame off as a gif I tried exporting it in every format available and no matter what I turn it into it still won't cut the first or last frame. I even tried making the clip longer to simply make a cut somewhere in the middle but I still wind up not being able to split it correctly... It's always 1 frame off, and the 1 frame off iwinds up as a static image so when you render in the final AVI file it stutters from the 1 static frame...
I'm wondering if it won't allow the split because of the clip length being so short as it's only 6 frames long (.22 seconds). I have no problem splitting anything else at the first or last frame but this one clip just refuses no matter what I do to it...
(I'd do a screen shot but am working another project at the moment) But you can see what not being able cut one frame from it does here ...It is the page background (not the annoying clock on top of it)... & you'll see the stutter it causes with the extra single frame in the word ALLOY bkgd animation...

Re: Can't split at first or last frame, WHY?
The last frame begins at 0.0.17.23. So if your scrubber is sitting at 0.0.17.24, it is sitting at the end of the video and you of course can't do a split at that position. You have to be at 0.0.17.23 to split the last frameMrJohnny wrote:Hi

Can you provide a sample of the 6 frame video?
There is a piece of free software called “Video to Jpeg”, that rips video into jpeg images, one for each frame.
That will create 6 images that you can add to the timeline, setting the duration of each image to 1 frame should play the frames as a video, now you can simply remove the first or last image.
Render the remainder back to a video file, assuming it is now smooth.

Re: Can't split at first or last frame, WHY?
Thanks for the suggestion Lata...
I regularly use CorelDraw X8 & Painter15... that never even crossed my mind, I'll give it a whirl...
Below is the original gif I started with... tried to upload the actual movie file but it just spits back a file type not allowed message, .mov, mp4, mpg etc...

Re: Can't split at first or last frame, WHY?
Hi
You would be best to use a graphics editor rather than Video Studio, besides Video Studio cannot create Gif video so you will not get a transparent video.
The sample is a Gif using 12.5 fps, at least that’s how VS sees it.
Each frame has been duplicated, effectively slowing down playback.
Video Studios timelines will be set to 25/29 fps, that will also duplicate frames as your 12.5fps need to fit 25fps (pal), so as you nudge down the timeline you can identify the duplicated frames.
Does not help when trying to edit slow frames per second. If may be possible to set the timelines to 12 ish fps using AVI, not sure if you can render to that.
The actual gif has only 12 frames, half of which are duplicated, then playback simply repeats.
I opened the sample in Corel C3D, set duration to 12 frames and played repeatedly, looked ok, similar to your web page “scribble” that plays ok.
Oh I tried the Video to Jpeg software bit did not like Gif, so that’s a no go.
As for the end frames, the first frame is 00:00:00:00, the curser sits at the beginning of that frame, for the last frame, again it sits at the beginning of the frame, we need to go back one frame to do a cut, does look like its cutting two. Then the addition of duplicate frames also complicates things, clear as mud.
Its always best for the timelines to have the same frame rate as our video frame rate, at 12.5 that may not be possible.

Re: Can't split at first or last frame, WHY?
Hi canuck
Thanks for the clarification.
The file/clip is 18s long at 25fps = 450 frames. In VS x10 Ult , when the scrubber (CTI) is positioned at the end of the clip by using the "End" arrow beneath the Preview Window it finishes up at position 0.0.17:24, the beginning of the last frame. This is logical because from position 0 through position 24 gives 25 frames each second, therefore the last frame of an 18s clip is at 0.0.17:24 and is unavailable to trim in this case.
The scissors are grayed out at this position, using the "One frame back" arrow beneath the Preview Window lands the CTI at position 0.0.17:23, two frames from the end. Using the now available scissors to trim the last frame(s) and then delete. Render this to an output file, pull it into GSpot, and review the number of frames, this shows as 448 frames. Two frames have been trimmed, not one.
John

Yep... re-did all the frames in Corel Draw X8, was pretty painless... I haven't made a gif in years. Works fine now : )

Hi OBB
That’s good, I did mention that the clip had duplicate frames, also noticed that one frame had two duplicates, one of the middle frames, I would think that was causing the pulse in playback.

I was working on a Halloween 2017 video... wrote the tune 20 years ago, 1997... Thought I would add some imagery to it... So I'll go back to my live-wallpaper thing (Monday) ... : )
