Hi,
It is in fact a variation of adding unusual characters, like the@ symbol, or the one (C enclosed in a circle) to indicate copyright.

Several years ago I did a handout for my VS students on doing this, and it works through the windows character map. Its attached as a pdf file. If you can obtain a math symbol font you like, and add it to the list of fonts in the windows character map, then this method should work for what you want to do.
