PaintShop Pro 2018 Ultimate Update popup

Post by misterfixit1 »

I updated my program Wednesday October 4th and the "update is available" popup still pops up once a day. I contacted support and they say this is normal. Has anyone else experieced this? Support says they may implement programming in the future that will detect when sn update has been installed. They told me how to stop the updater help. If I do this I won't recieve future update notifications. This is weird.

Can you tell us how to do that, others may benefit, besides we can always use Check for Updates

Yes I get this too. Doesn't give me much faith in the product if they cant get something like this right without annoying users.

Yes I can post the steps they gave me. When I use the check for updates it tells me an important update is available but doesn't specify update 1. This needs to be fixed as some users may apply the same update more than once. Also on their updates page they should include the version number of the update in the release notes.

I will post the steps when I get back to my computer. It is not a fix. It just stops the program from checking for updates.

The usual way to prevent PSP from checking for updates is to go to Help>Message Preferences and uncheck both boxes.

There is no danger of the update being applied more than once. If you try it, PSP comes up with the unhelpful message that the program does not need an update at this stage, which is Corel's way of saying it has already been updated. We have pressed them for some time now to post a clear message, but it has not happened...

I asked about the popup when PaintShop Pro 2018 was already updated and they responded with the following:
With PaintShop Pro 2018 closed first thing to do is to disable the Corel Update Helper:
1. Open up a run prompt by holding down the windows key on your keyboard + the letter "r"
2. Type Taskschd.msc and press ok.
3. Once the Task Scheduler app appears highlight the Task Scheduler Library Folder towards the top left.
4. The box on the right will show you what programs have scheduled tasks.
5. Locate the CorelUpdateHelperTaskCore task and right click on it.
6. Choose disable.
7. Close the window.
8. Under the help menu in PaintShop Pro 2018 you can click on message preferences and uncheck the box for "Keep me informed with the latest product-related messages".
9. Click on "OK"
10. Alternatively, you can always clear the messages folder under %appdata%\Corel\Messages

-Steps to delete the files in the messages folder. -
1. Close all programs
2. Press Windows key + R
3. In the Open: text box type: %appdata% and press Enter
4. Locate and open the Corel folder.
5. Locate and open the folder named: Messages.
6. Click one file to select it then press CTRL+A to select all
7. Press Delete on your keyboard to delete the files. Click Skip if you get warnings that certain files may be in use.
8. Close the window.
9. Clear Recycle Bin.
10. Start PaintShop Pro.
I then asked why the program kept saying an update was available when it was already updated. I asked why the program did not recognize that it was updated and then clear the message automatically. They responded with the following:
I would like to extend my apologies if you are experiencing issues with the software. Actually, you are right, the updates and popup ads are an auto-generated section of Corel that opens when you use your software. This is to make sure that the users already receive the message/updates. And these are not just happening on Corel but also with other software company like Adobe, NetSuite, Oracle, etc. Automatic detection with disabling option is not happening at this time but we all have options to stop the messages/ popups.

That being said, we want to thank you for the inputs. Your insight is very important to us and will be taken as a recommendation that we can send to the appropriate department. Almost every improvement to Corel has come from direct feedback and suggestions.
I did not perform any of the recommended steps. See my next post.

I gave them my version number when I contacted them. It was 20.1.0.15 x64 I read another thread that the update was version 20.2.0.1 Under the check for updates it kept showing an update is available. I installed the update from Corel's update page and now I get 20.2.0.1 x64 I now check for updates and it shows no updates available now. I like PaintShop Pro but shouldn't tech support have caught this by looking at my version number?

Of course they should have. And perhaps you should have checked for updates as per the prompt? :-)

I checked for updates. It said update number 1 was available. I installed it. The popup kept coming back. I checked and it said update number 1 was available. Who would think there were 2 update number 1's. :P
