PSPX8 bump maps PNG files

Post by Eurostar27 »

I have been using PSP for many years for photo and texture editing. I am trying to create a bump map for a PNG texture to use in games/simulators. No matter how much I look online, I can not find any step by step tutorials on this subject, just bits and pieces of info that does not really help. Can a PNG file embed a bump map or is the bump map a separate file? I'm sure PSPX8 can do this by creating an extra layer or mask (normalmap) within the PNG texture file? I have tried using 'cpetry normalmap online' but it does not work for some reason? I load the PNG texture, thinking the bump map conversion is done, download the new file, and find that all I get is a blank white image that's only about 4kb? I just can not find any info on this, maybe someone here does?

Well PNGs don't tend to have separate layers, so the bump map will be its own file.

1) Open the texture you're building a bump map for
2) A bump map is just a greyscale image where the blacks represent the lowest points and the white represent the highest points. You can use greyscale command or the B&W Photo Effect to turn the image greyscale.
3) Then just use various brightness & contrast options to emphasize the distinctions between the highest and lowest points. Save as a new PNG.

This is a lot easier with a program that helps you visualize how your bumpmap is effecting final result.

The usual recommended option is to use Nvidia's Texture Tools plugin. https://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-tex ... -photoshop
