Re: overlay layers
Okay, so my first recommendation is figure out how the animation software works. If the animation software has tools built in that will make this easier you want to utilize them as much as possible. The easiest method is to create the final image in PSP, and then import that into your software and use the animation software's tools to do the actual animation of the writing. This is easier if the software has built-in masking. What I assume you meant by overlay layers. A mask hides portions of the image until you reveal them. Each software product handles this differently.
For an almost pure PSP method continue reading. This is going to take a long time. I'm including a short video speed up to show the process.
Doing something like that in PSP, while possible and I believe we've all said it is, is not easy. It's very long drawn out process. What you would need to do is know how many frames per second you want, and how long you want the animation to be.
For example, most video animations are at a minimum 24 frames per second at most 29.95 frames per second. If it's going to take 3 seconds for the whole animation to finish you need 3 x 24 = 72 frames. We'll stick with this. You can use more frames or fewer frames, it's up to you, just know how long each frame takes and know that fewer frames make jerkier choppier animation.
Each frame is a single picture. You can use the same project file, but you must save each frame as its own image. I will include a video of the process that I used.
1) To start create the image the size of your video. I've gone for a full 720HD. So 1280x720 pixels in size.
2) Add a text layer in the font you want. I've done a simple "Title"
3) With the text layer still selected I add a mask layer by going to Layers -> New Mask Layer -> Hide All
4) The result should look blank.
5) Using the paint brush set to white I begin painting on the mask to slowly show portions of the text.
6) After showing a portion of text, I save the result as a new file using a simple numbering system for the filename
7) I do this 72 times until the text is fully revealed.
8) If you want to add an actual hand or pencil or brush image on top that follows the brush stroke you can do so. You just need a separate layer with the hand or brush above the mask layer. And move it into position before saving out the frame.
9) Once you've got all of your frames. Import them into your animation tool of choice. In my case I"m using the only tool on my computer, Camtasia Studio.
10) Export your video.
Now, in the video I also duplicated the text layer and put it on top so I'd have my starting points when unmasking. I just had to make sure to hide the top text layer before saving. I also ended up 10 frames short of my goal, this is not a problem. Just be aware that the animation will be faster than expected. Also Camtasia only allows each frame to be 1/10th of a second long so my initial guess of 24 frames per second is incorrect. It's going to be 10 frames per second. My bad. This is important to know when designing your animation.
THe demo took about 20 minutes to record, so it's massively sped up to just show the general process.
