I think I'll stick with the originial update. Had to redo all the settings and 2018 is running fine for me.
I am now not convinced that this second version of Update 1 will be of any benefit. Wait and see?

That gives me a preliminary indication that this might be another bug that's system specific. If it doesn't get fixed and I still want to use 2018 instead of X9 I'll likely have to do a complete uninstall/reinstall and simply forego the updates.

Anyone else getting text instead of icons in the Layer's palette tools or is it just me?

I also get text only in the Layers palette. I have now completely uninstalled PSP2018 and its 2 failed updates, and will only reinstall the original release. I really don't know what has happened with Corel. Very poor show!

I had this problem with X8 but resetting the layers palette fixed it. I didn't have it in X9 and don't have it now. And I have updated with the second version of Update1

I tried resetting the Layers palette and then I lost the text also! Then if I clicked where the buttons should be it would show a button press (the grey background would change to a lighter grey square) and the option menu would open but there was no icon in that spot and so I didn't know what I was pressing until I clicked and the menu opened. And, while reloading PSP brought back the text stuff, most items are off the screen and can't be read without greatly expanding the width of the palette.

UPDATE ON MY LACK OF LAYER PALETTE ICONS: I completely uninstalled 2018 and then reinstalled and the icons came back on the Layers palette. Being a chance taker I then installed the latest (fixed) update before I did any customizations and I still have the icons. I can only suspect that previously installing the fixed update over the first buggy update caused my issue, but will never know for sure.

Now I have to do all of my workspace customizations over again, plus preferences, etc. One hopes there are no new bugs in this update! :-)

Thanks for the Update, JoeB.

How did you trigger that problem? Your info will help us replicate / fix the issue. I sent the same reply from you other thread regarding the same problem.

Originally I had the non-updated PSP2018. When the first (buggy) update came out I installed it before realizing it was buggy and I found that I had most of the bugs being reported shortly thereafter by others. I reverted to using X0 rather than reinstalling 2018 so just left the buggy version on my system. When the fixed update came out I installed it on the existing, buggy updated 2018. It was when I was was updating my preferences (which had been removed by the first update) and checking to make sure that my boundscripts from my customized workspace were all working that I noticed the issue with the Layers palette. The problem is, because I simply stopped using 2018 after I realized the first update was buggy I cannot say for certain if the lack of icons on the Layers palette existed due to the installation of the buggy update or happened when I installed the fixed update over the buggy update.

My saved and customized workspace had returned all of my customized buttons, including the boundscript showing on the bottom left of the Layers palette in my image attachement, but failed to show icons in that palette after the second update. For certain, prior to the first (buggy) update I did have icons in that palette.

And speaking of boundscripts, could you guys/gals PLEASE make it so that we can provide our own icons to bind to scripts? The limited selection is ludicrous and greatly diminishes user experience!

Thanks for the note, JoeB.

According to Kathy_9, which replied to your other thread, she was suggesting that this isn't a new issue. Can you confirm whether you've experienced this for the first time in PSP2018 or in other versions as well?

Only with 2018, and only after updating it. So, based on Kathy_9's comment, it's possible the issue arose after the first update and I didn't notice because I didn't use it after I couldn't change the default opening tab and then read more posts about even more bugs. So I hadn't had any need to look at the Layers palette after I installed the first update.

It's working just fine since my reinstall and the second update - at least no issues I have detected yet.

And the boundscript icons??? :-)

There have, in the past, been issues where workspaces imported into PSP have resulted in all icons being replaced with text. So technically the symptom is not new. Can't say if it was the exact same problem or something unique. But considering only a small number have seen it (two that I know of) it's possible it's the same.

Nev do you know of any plans to improve workspace saving/manipulation? I mean, as you know, the current workspace files are essentially nothing more than registry values. The end result is that if the necessary binary flags change then most of the settings in the old workspace don't translate. Wondering if there are plans for a more programmatic workspace description file? Maybe something that could be done via scripting? That would make it potentially cross-version compatible as you don't need to get binary strings correct, you just need to call the correct placement data and PSP handles the binary settings for you.

To add to this and FWIW, I've had issues with icons changing, disappearing and only text showing on the layers palette dating back to at least X5. I was unable to pinpoint what caused this and one day the icons would be incorrect or missing and the next day they would be back.

Because of the inconsistent nature of the issue it's pretty hard to determine root cause and take corrective action.

Note: I don't import workspaces from previous versions. I did this once and it caused me to miss a new feature so I don't do it anymore.

I had this issue for a while in X8 where the layers palette only had text and I also have never attempted to import and older workspace. It was fixed by resetting the layers palette, suggested by a Corel poster here on this forum., and it has never come back in any other version. As far as I know, it was never related to any Corel updates.

Thank you all very much for the info.

We were pretty certain that this wasn't an issue unique to PSP2018 Update 1 but we wanted to make sure via collective feedback. It's near impossible to catch every single issue even with a dedicated test team and automated test machines. We found a small customization issue that triggered a domino effect through the app. It was not pretty but it's now fixed. It is for this reason that we had to pull the initial Update 1 right off the server.

We've actually been looking at this in the past months but it's more complicated than it appears. That's not to say it cannot be done. No promises. The only thing I can say is we'll continue exploring all possibilities.

Thanks again,

Nev I'm sure everyone here on these forums appreciates your contributions and input. It's something that Corel needs to do more often. Yes I know it can snowball. But just short comments such as 'we are aware of the issue and are looking into it' would be reassuring to users that Corel does care.

Another suggestion. Hear that snowball coming?
It would benefit us all if Corel, somewhere, published a list of systems and setups that Corel tests with. That way we can gain an insight into if the problem 'really' is a Corel problem or maybe just a user set up issue. It would help both users and Corel narrow down issues in a more timely manner.
