I am partaking in the BW course for PSP. I have run into the problem that in Project 24 I cannot erase the elipses as instructed. I have chosen the correct layer but still no success. Thank you in advance.

Re: PSP 2018 refuses to erase elipses
You should first direct your problem to your mentor as many here would not have done that workshop and would be unaware of what you mean by Project 24.
" I cannot erase the elipses as instructed." will not tell the mentor very much but if you attach a screenshot and say when I try to erase on layer xx ... the eraser stops working ? the eraser has no effect ? the eraser removes on another layr? etc Be specific and make sure the mentor knows exactly where you are.

Re: PSP 2018 refuses to erase elipses
Are you using the Eraser Tool or the Background Eraser Tool? The Background Eraser Tool won't give you what you want.

Thank you HartPaul, I have already done that but no solving so far. Thank you theavy, it is the eraser I am using not the Background Eraser.

Go into your options and either turn on or turn off (I can't remember) the Scratch Disk. This is found under the display and caching options.

Re: PSP 2018 refuses to erase elipses
Try this:
Windows > Untabbed documents untick
1. New document 500 x 500 transparent
2. Choose the Ellipse tool (associated with the Preset Shapes tool) set a blue color for the foreground and a transparent background and draw an ellipse with a width of 20 pixels.
This will appear on a new vector layer.
3.Drag that layer thumb onto the workspace. It will auto crop to just include the ellipse. you can minimise the original image
4. Double click the layer thumb to get the Layers Properties Dialog. Click the Layer Styles tab and tick the Bevel box. Settings Size 60 , Opacity 43 X and Y both at 50.
5. Right click the ellipse layer and Convert to a Raster Layer
6 Right click the Ellipse and Copy.
7. New Document 1000 x 1000 pixels . Right click inside and Paste as New layer. Repeat.
You should now have three layers The bottom raster layer white or transparent does not matter, and two raster layers above ., both a blue ellipse.
8. Now use the move tool to overlap the two elipses.
9. Turn off the visibility of the top and bottom layer and make sure that middle layer is selected in the layers palette.
10 choose the magid wand tool and set the Match mode to all opaque and click the ellipse. It should now be the only thing selected.
11. Turn the visibility of the top layer on. make the top layer active. You will see two overlap points of the two ellipses, you should now be able to use the eraser tool to erase one of these to create the illusion that the two ellipses are interlocked.
12. Selections > Select none . Make the top layer active, right click the layer in the Layers Palette and Merge Down.
You should finish with something like this:

Re: PSP 2018 refuses to erase elipses
Thank you so much for the comprehensive instructions, must have taken ages. Would you believe that I have cracked the BW Project. My problem was I couldn't erase Layer 2, the reason was the visibility tags for layer 1 were ticked, not mentioned in instructions. Took me three days, I uninstalled PSP, re-installed, I set it to default, everything but have myself checked for sanity.
Thank you again
Thank you again

Re: PSP 2018 refuses to erase elipses
Yes that is a fairly complex 4 ring example they provide, but I tried to break it down to a simple two ring example to show the idea and how it worked.
Once you understand the process and what you are doing , you can then see where the tutorial is heading.
Better to follow the series of steps with understanding than to follow a recipe without an awareness of the surprise at the end
