How do I make a selection with fixed size?

Post by DorkyBookNerd »

Hi all! I hope someone can help me, because I'm about to pull my hair out.

Here is what I'm trying to do. I have a square or rectangular image that I want to copy a 1" circle from a portion of the image. I've tried using the selection tools, choosing the circle, and choosing the fixed size option, and set it to "1". The circle I see when I do this is really, really small. There is no way that is 1" in size. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

The number you enter for the size is in pixels. You need to do some conversions to figure out the number of pixels you need for 1" - and is that dimension on the screen or when printed. under View in the menu select rulers to get an idea of the dimensions in your image.

As MarkZ said, it it important to know whether you are wanting the circle to take up a 1" physical area of your monitor, or whether you are speaking about being able to print the selected portion of the image as a 1" printed output. I'm not sure why you would be needing to have a selection that took up a 1" physical space on your monitor. While you can calculate how many pixels the selection has to be to achieve that - based on your monitor resolution - it will only look like 1" on your monitor but will not look like that on a monitor with a different resolution.

Usually people are only concerned with inches when it comes to printing an image (e.g., they might want the image to print as a standard 4" x 6" photo). When that is the case then it is the resolution of the image (PPI or Pixels Per Inch) that is used to determine the size of the printed output.

Pixels! DUH! It sure would be nice if they had an option for what measurement you'd like to use.

Thank you so much for your help!!! :D

It's easy enough to get the measurement you want to use. But you haven't said yet whether you want the measurement to be what the selection measures on your monitor or what it measures when printed.

I want it to be what it measures when printed. I figured it out. It's about 150 pixels in size. I'm going with 155 pixels so it's just a tad bigger than 1".

Thanks again!
