PSP X8: Clicking "Save" goes to "Save As" dialog box

Post by DaveG74 »

I have an existing image open in PSP X8.
When I click the Save icon in the menu, it goes to the "Save As" dialog box. Then, I'm forced to manually locate and point to the destination image and confirm. When I click Save every time thereafter in this editing session, it saves normally without a "Save As" prompt.

Why does it go to "Save As" the first time, and how do I stop it from doing this? Thanks in advance.

This was a "nanny feature" added in X8 to help hopless PSPers from accidentally saving an image with a low compression.
It defaulted to the Save As dialog with the compression visible so that mistake would not be made. Subsequent saves of the same image would perform normally BUT saves of different images in the same session (eg processing 10 images on the work space at once) would always go to the Save As dialog first.

Because of the huge complaints this was fixed in PSP X9 and also 2018 so that the first Save in a session (no matter how long the session or number of images ) would go to the Save As dialog so you could check the compression and thereafter Save would perform normally.
Systems available Win7, Win 8.1,Win 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.2007 & version 20H2 Build 19042.867

Thank you, Paul, for the prompt response. But your explanation leaves me slightly confused. What you stated in the second paragraph -- Save going to "Save As" the first time, and then Save every time thereafter...isn't that the same as what's happening now, in X8?

I know the properties of my image, and when I click Save, I just want it to Save.

No, eh makes the distinction that in X8 it did this on every image, later versions only did it once during the length of the program run.

So in X8 if you open 3 images and edited them,
Hit save on Image 1 it'll go to Save As. Hit save again and it will just save.
Hit save on Image 2 and it'll go to Save As
Hit save on Image 3 an it'll go to Save As

In later versions you have three images which have been edited.
Hit save on Image 1 it'll go to Save As. Hit save again and it will just save.
Hit Save on Image 2 and it'll just save
Hit Save on Image 3 and it'll just save.

Close the program

Open three more images and edit them.
Hit save on image 1 and it'll open Save As, hit save again and it'll just save.
etc.
etc.

So the use of Save As on the first image lasts until you close the program. But in X8 it does it for every image that's open.

Thank you, Levi, for the clarification. It appears, then, that what you both have explained doesn't necessarily apply to my issue, because I typically edit one image at a time. I'm guessing the workings of the Save button can't be changed/toggled via the Preferences menu.

I'm just wishing that clicking Save meant a hard save, but I guess that's the way the system was designed and it's the way it works. I mean, I can deal with the "Save As" dialog box, but it's an unnecessary extra step and I'm just invoking common sense into this simple function.

Thanks for your help! :)

It appears that this does not happen with uncompressed TIF files. Only happens with JPG files on my system using PSP X8.

Yes, this only happens on JPG images because of the compression setting. They made this change because when people would open large JPGs and save them they were freaking out that the size of the image dropped dramatically. Some saw 8MB images drop to 2MB because they weren't properly setting the compression. So they made an annoying but simple method for ensuring that when people save they aren't accidentally saving at a higher compression than intended.

There is a way around it. Hold SHIFT when clicking on the save button. This won't work if you use the save shortcut key. If you want a shortcut key for saving then you'll need a script. There is an old script in the scripting sub-section of these forums for a replacement save in X8. This, when set to a shortcut key, will simply save the file like you're used to.
