Hmmm... I have X8, X9 and PSP 2018 on two Core i3 64 bit computers running Windows 10. One has 4 GB RAM and is about 9 years old, and the other 8 GB and is 4 years old. The latter is my main computer these days, and used not only with PSP but also for video editing. Yet it works just fine with all these versions of PSP and simply does not crash at all with it. Admittedly, though, I do not edit large BMPs.brucet wrote:I would caution purchasing PSP2018 until you were sure it will work on your system. I have PSPx8 on my old i3 64 bit Win 7 laptop. PSPx8 struggles. It works but struggles and often crashes or locks up. How will PSP2018 work on your system?

Ken I run files in the 2-300 meg size. Also use a number of plugins. An old i3 64 bit machine simply wont cope.
The OP needs to consider all the consequences of an upgrade.

Thanks
My system is has an i7 3.4Ghz CPU with 8GB DDR3 1600 memory which is quite fast.
What do you think of my system regarding whether or not PSP2018 will be ok?

Your best bet is to download the trial and see how it works on your system.

Re: Not enough memory to complete this operation
Wow I see what you mean.
I downloaded and installed a trial copy of PSP2018 (version 20.something) BUT on an old PC which only has a Core 2 Duo CPU and 2Gb DDR3 1333 memory.
I was able to load my large image file AND create TWO layers without any errors BUT after I did that the hard drive went into overdrive (saving PSP217A.TMP) and I lost control of PSP2018 for absolutely ages while that TMP file was saved.
At least that proves that PSPX2 does not handle memory well (I was unable to create even one layer).
I wasn't impressed with the screen display in PSP2018 either although that is probably a learning thing to know how to display all the layers and allow selection of a layer to work on - I didn't try as I had lost control of it.
Maybe I will look to purchase an older version of PSP maybe X6 even if it costs more than the lucrative offer from Corel to upgrade to PSP2018 for just $A32.
I must re read the posts to this thread as someone I think mentioned that some versions allowed creation of layers for a large image and others didn't (like X2).
Thanks for everyone's input. At least I (and maybe others) have learned a lot about PSP and memory handling.

Re: Not enough memory to complete this operation
That loss of control is the auto-save. You can turn that off. It's most annoying on larger images as they do take time to save. Or you can increase the amount of time between saves. I believe it's normally set to every 5 minutes.

Thanks
Maybe I will try that again turning off auto save.
BTW to you have PSP X7, X8 or X9 and if so are they as resource hungry as 2018 and can they handle large images (eg 15000 x 15000 and above) especially with creating layers?

Re: Not enough memory to complete this operation
Well, after just starting up and no images open X9 = 90MB of RAM x8 = 72MB of RAM and 2018 = 68MB of RAM
Created a blank 15000x15000 image and added 7 extra blank layers. x9 = 1057MB of RAM x8 = 1024MB of RAM an 2018 = 865MB of RAM.
After painting a few lines they pretty much evened out at 2058MB of RAM.
X9 - Was a little slow at first. After restarting it the speed picked up. The 64-bit version seemed a tiny bit faster at painting than the 32-bit even after I added 7 layers. But it wasn't a huge difference. After seven layers I was using 2000MB of RAM. Auto-save took a good minute and a half to complete.
Most of the UI was fairly responsive on my computer. Some lag from time to time, especially when changing tools or selecting a new layer. Not the fastest I've ever worked, but I never work at sizes as large as 15000 pixels on a side.
X8 - Pretty much the same. Auto-save a minute and a half
2018 - Same lag on occasion as X9 and X8. Once again no major difference in speed between 64-bit and 32-bit. A minute for auto-save to complete.
As far as my own computer is concerned, X8, X9, and 2018 functioned similarly. 2018 slightly better in how much memory was being used. But not by much, and the advantage quickly went away. I would also like to say its brush and effect engines are every so slightly faster on normal sized images. Though we have had at least one person complain that on their computers it's slower. So, I can't guarantee consistency.
But yeah, at those sizes neither of the three were a clear winner.

Re: Not enough memory to complete this operation
Thanks Levifunction.
I must say that being familiar with the layout of X2 I found the default layout of 2018 slightly daunting although doing a Google search reminded me of things like that pressing (key)F8 or selecting 'layers' from the View>Palettes drop down menu will display the 'layers pane' on screen - something which had slipped my (old) mind.
Also I have found quite a few books published on earlier versions but not yet of course for 2018. I find that books which have lots of images to explain things makes it easier for me to 'grapple' things. Although Google searches usually will answer many question I have regarding functionality.

Re: Not enough memory to complete this operation
As a long time user of PSP, (Jasc SP5), I have found that the changes/upgrades between PSP versions is getting less and less obvious. I have downloaded the trial of PSP2018. Found the changes in work flow and UI annoying. Old dog new tricks syndrome.
I will admit that PSP is no longer my go to editor. But many many times I use PSP to use a few favourite tools. I'm still stuck on PSPx8. But that may change as I play with PSP2018. But Levifictions tests and the lack of 'new' features in PSP2018 may not encourage me open up my wallet.
If performance alone is the key then I can't see the benefits of an upgrade as x7, x8 and x9 will handle all the layers that are needed. And save some money.

Re: Not enough memory to complete this operation
What you call the "Default layout" in PSP might be the "Essential"" workspace, while you would likely use the "Complete" workspace. You can change it from the Welcome screen (or the Home tab on top).
The other change from X2 will be the Material palette. But if you prefer the older one, you can change it through File > Preferences > General Program Preferences and in the Palette tab, check the Use Classic Material Properties.
For the Text tool, that also changed but if you want the Text entry window like before, just hold the Shift key when you click on your project to activate the text entry.

Re: Not enough memory to complete this operation
Thanks for that knowledge Cassel. A bit like Windows being able to use the 'Classic view'. I might yet purchase 2018.
Brucet, if you have an old version of PSP such as X2 and want 2018 cheap I suggest that you use the earlier version (I am using X2) and hope for a small window to appear when you load an image offering you 2017 at 75% off. I am thinking that somehow Corel can 'tell' via the internet that you have an old version and offer you the savings. Don't know how they do it but maybe it's what version you have REGISTERED with them (and so if you have registered a recent version regardless of the version you are using you may not get the offer).

Re: Not enough memory to complete this operation
Jparnold I have all the versions up to x8. I live in Australia and overseas for 4-5 months a year. I can get PSP2018 for a huge range of prices. So upgrading and paying is not my issue. For me it's all about time. I'm not prepared to 'suffer' through a new learning curve for small incremental changes. Let alone be a beta tester for Corel chasing 'bugs'.
I'll play with the PSP2018 trial for a while. IMHO PSP versions are no longer a 'must have' upgrade.

Re: Not enough memory to complete this operation
Hi brucet,
I totally agree with you ( I'm not prepared to 'suffer' through a new learning curve for small incremental changes) and that is why I have not upgraded from X2 as it does everything I want.
The purpose of this thread was to determine why I was getting an 'out of memory' when attempting to create layers with large image files and whether an upgrade would fix that problem and it seems that it would. It seems that older versions were not written to handle memory very well (out of memory with a 700Mb image file and 8GB memory and no other 'user' processes running in the background - pathetic.
I have found that GIMP will allow me to create 'masks' using layers for my project and its FREE so I will probably save my money. At most purchase X6 or X8.
