MyDocuments rarely has actual photos. They can exist, like textures and patterns. The brushes files and others don't open directly in PSP for editing, they open as part of various tools and commands inside PSP. So you have to go to the appropriate place inside PSP to open files of specific types. Like gradients, those are opened in the color picker under the gradient tab. Picture Frames those are opened in the picture frame command. Brushes are opened with any brush tool that supports different brush heads. Etc.

Until today I'd been using it as usual. I went to get a selection and the whole Documents file has a GRAY X

Ah, I'm sorry I had misunderstood.

Are these files/folders redirected from anywhere? That x I've seen on Network shared folders when it can't access them and there is no offline cache.

Not redirected from anywhere else.

I tried the File Restore where I right clicked on the file in the PSP workspace and it gave File Restore as an option;
and that worked.
I opened an image I was working on , went to get a Selection, and the evil
Gray X was back.

I figured you misunderstood which was why I sent the images.

Why does the image you posted show two Documents folders, one with the X and one without?

Seems more like a Windows issue. Almost as if the Documents folder is a hardlink to another drive and now it can't connect to it. But you said it wasn't redirected from anywhere. But you'll definitely want to talk to some Windows experts.

This may help. Someone suggested that the grey x was in the position where an arrow would be indicating a shortcut and so the icon cache may have been corrupted.

You can quickly check this by changing the View to Details rather than icons or thumbnails so you can see if the Grey X is associated with shortcuts to those folders.

This long thread suggests that some problems may be related to Dropbox synchronisation.

Thanks for the ideas.
I will sure look into them.
I was thinking 'corruption' might be the problem.

And it happened just after the update I had the other day.
