Narrowed it down to my firewall program. While I haven't fired up Snort yet, I'll bet it comes down to the way the firewall handles a ping from VS X10.

I probably need to ignore one outbound connection visual indicator as I couldn't find an allowed outbound in the logs (shows as blocked which is what I want).

When I'm really bored I'll run Snort and plow through the logs. However, the core issues of Corel's program remains - why are they relying on this?

Relying on what, VS does not require an internet connection to run, unlike some other NLE's Adobe for one. Internet connection is only required to register the program, check for updates and download from the "Do More"tab. For most of us, running the program with or without internet connection makes no difference whatsoever

Further to Robert's remarks .. .
'For most of us, running the program with or without internet connection makes no difference whatsoever'
I'd add 'once started'.

All the data so far has been about start times: variations thereof. Once it gets going, I find performance is consistent with or without the net connected. Unless you want to do something that needs the net, like rendering to a web site.

Just wanted to add my issue to this so the OP isn't a lone voice.

We are trying to run 120 VideoStudio 10 licenses accross our school network. The load-time is consistently 4:20 - 4:30 with no obvious errors. Having found this thread, i logged a machine in as the local administrator (no network dependencies) and tried loading it with and without a network connection.

With the network connected: 4:27
Without the network connected: 7 seconds

Clearly there is a problem here. We connect to the internet through a heavily filtered proxy server which is standard for schools in the UK. In fact, our ISP is RM PLC who (as much as i hate them) are one of the largest service providers for schools in the UK.

I deployed the software with the IOFF=1 parameter to switch off network features, but that makes no difference.

I'll be putting a support ticket in with Corel asap, so will let you know if we get any helpful hints back.

Hi Matt

And welcome to the forums.

I think there are two different issues here.
First the replies are referring to the program being installed on one PC (as the EULA) and not connected through a network.
Then with or without internet connection makes little or no difference to be an issue.

Your setup through a Schools Network having multiple licences is a different kettle of fish.
I would think the issue is just that using a Network to access the programs. ( I would think you know more about that than we do)
We are installed to a single pc with internet, not networked.

And like you my program launches in 7 seconds, although the first launch after reboot pc would be a little slower at 10 seconds.

So yes 4 minutes is quite a long time, I would suggest you contact Corel Support for their thoughts on the slow launch?

Hey Trevor,
The application doesnt do anything special when installed from a network. it has no dependencies installed to network locations, it just installs a local copy on the machine in the same way you would if you installed from a CD.
I think the issues sound very alike and i suspect there is a problem with some undocumented access required out over the internet which "times out" rather than gracefully failing under certain circumstances (firewall / proxy servers).
I have raised a ticket with Corel and linked this thread, so we'll see if they have any thoughts.

Just to be clear, i tested a fresh install today on a machine, logging in as the local administrator. it runs fine with the network disabled (so no dependencies on the lan at all) and takes 4:30 when it's enabled.

All that said, my 1st post on a new forum, hijacking an existing 6 month old thread is not something i'm hugely happy about!! I'll let you know if i get anywhere with Corel, but have no intention of making this all about me ;)

Cheers,
Matt

Just a quick update on my ticket with Corel (4601306 in-case anyone else needs to refer to it). It was escalated to Auz (who has sorted complex stuff out for us before) and he has confirmed it's an identified issue and has been escalated on to the engineering department:
"After reviewing the facts before me, it has been found that the problem being reported is already known to us and has been reported to our Engineering department for review and action. This case will be elevated to the Engineering team to have action against it."
So, no easy fix right now, but it's in front of the right people.

Again, i will update if i have anything substantial to report!

Cheers,
Matt
