PSP 2018 - strange response from the clone brush

Post by narrowgauge »

In my install of PSP 2018 the clone brush does not work as it did. Instead of covering what I don't want with what I do want it covers what I don't want with a pattern of vertical lines. The settings are exactly the same as on my installation of PSP X9.
And what is the overlay supposed to do? Or where is it supposed to do it? It seems to make no difference if it is selected or not.
Any thoughts?

Are you working on the background layer ?
Try to duplicate it as new layer and work on the duplicated.

Or perhaps are you working on an adjustment layer ?

Yes, I was, a greyscale photograph. But then found I did not have the problem with colour images, and I that could use the tool correctly once I had converted the greyscale photograph to a raster image. I had not come across that before.
Thanks for your answer.

For clarification, unless your image was originally a vector image it was already a raster(bitmap) image. I assume you mean once you promoted the Background layer (which is already a raster image layer without transparency named Background) you were able to work with it properly. When you promote the background layer the default name applied by PSP is Raster 1, and new added layers are named Raster 2, Raster 3, etc. That's simply to differentiate them from vector layers, which by default are named Vector 1, Vector 2, etc. when they are created. You can rename any layer to any name you want to make them easier to identify for you.

Ok! I have read the previous posts and have no idea what a raster or vector layer is...I am just trying to clean up my photos taken with an 1800s camera. I then scan them into tiff files and put them on PSP for cleaning up. Since upgrading to the new 2018 program I am getting barcode or vertical lines when trying to clone out scratches, please help or can I go back to my fairly dependable 9 ultimate version.

I'm having the same problem (at least it sounds like it) with the clone tool. On background layers and promoted background raster layers.
clone brush odd results
clone brush odd results

I've fiddled with the settings, and it doesn't seem to make much of a change in the result.

It is definitively a bug.
What you can do is Increase Color Depth to RGB 8 bit, make your cleaning and revert back to greysacle after the job.

This appears to be a bug introduced in PSP2018. In past versions (I tested X7 and X9), converting an image to grey scale did not cause any problems with the clone brush.
In PSP2018 an image converted to grey scale (Image > Greyscale) results in problems when using the clone brush.
To get normal operation you must convert the image (Image > Increase color depth) to at least RGB 8 bits / channel to have the clone tool function normally.

On the Standard Palette use the first white on the chart - this removed all those lines for me. Hope it helps you!
