PSP 2018 renaming in Manage removes last letter of file ext

Post by Wraith_3 »

I've had this problem going back multiple (like 5 or 6) versions of Paintshop Pro and have never heard an answer. When I'm in the Manage tab, if I rename any picture it will rename it, but remove the last letter of the file extension. So if it's a .jpg file it will rename it "picture.jp" and I will have to fix it. I've looked through the settings just in case it was something I had messed up, but don't see anything. Anyone know?

It doesn't happen with my PSP and, as you've had about 100 views with no responses I assume anyone who at least viewed your post doesn't have the issue either (although some of them may not actually have 2018).

I'd agree, but this has happened over multiple PCs and multiple PSP versions. It has never worked properly. I can't imagine I got so lucky that it's only happening to me.

Well, now you're close to 160 views and still no others reporting that issue - or replying at all except me. :-) I just tried renaming a file a couple of times in X7 also, and it kept all 3 letters of .jpg and all of the lettrs of .pspimage. Are you using extremely long file names, or anything else unusual? Does it do this with all extensions, even a long one like .pspimage (only removing the final "e")? By the way, file renaming is not a PSP function but a Windows function, even when you're doing it within a program and not Windows Explorer. Does it happens if you use Rename in other programs? If not then it's simply beyond me what might be happening.

And just out of curiousity, when you rename and just keep the extension that is missing the last letter, will the image file still open in PSP? And when looking at the file name in Windows Explorer is it also missing the final letter there? And, even so, will it open in other image viewers/editors?

If I rename anything in any other program it works fine. After I rename in PSP, the image isn't noticed by PSP because it doesn't recognize the format. You know I never tried anything other than .jpg files until now. I tried a .png file and it renamed it normally. Really weird. Now I have no idea what's happening. I'd think it was Windows 7, but like I said it's done that over multiple PCs and multiple Windows versions over the years.

I also just tried a .gif file and it worked fine. I can rename .jpg's fine using Batch Rename as well. It's something with the .jpg files in Manager.

At least it's good to know that all other file extensions rename correctly. And as nobody else has ever reported this issue it must be something to do with your installation of PSP (or a system specific issue of some sort) if the Manage tab renaming of only .jpg files is not working correctly. For the present, and as a workaround, I'd suggest first making sure that you save all images first as .pspimage files so that you always have an uncompressed and usable copy, and give it the name you want the jpg file to have. Then save again as jpg. Then you won't have to rename it at all.

and in any event, you should always save a copy of any image as pspimage just to make sure you have a good quality backup.

I'm going to install it on another PC this weekend so I'll see if it does the same thing on that one. Thanks for the help though!
