You add a color slide (black if you so wish) before and after your project then add a fade/FX Crossfade effect between the black color and first clip resp. last clip and clolor.
The length or your color slide and of the transition/effect is customisable like everything else.

If your fade is at the start of your video, or the end then you need to insert a
colour clip. (Click the drop down box under the "VideoStudio 9" logo at the top right of your screen then select "color")
You can set the length of the colour clip to anything you wish - default duration is 3 seconds.
Now simply drag a transition between the colour clip and your video
under the FX list of transitions you could choose crossfade, Disolve there is even a "fade to black" (obviously no good for a fade in).
You can set the length of the transition to anything you wish. Default setting is 1 second.

fade out

im assuming this is done in the edit option..

do i just place the black picked from drop down menu at the end and how do i do that, how does it join by just a render? and where is the 3 second default and where do i change it??

i tried to cut and fade in and out all at once, do i have to edit my clip first before adding crossfade and color black or can i do it all once, or do i have to cut it first render and then render again with fade in and out??

can i fade out the audio too?

Hi
What version of video studio are you using?

Use your mouse to drag and drop the clips from the colour library.
Use drag and drop to insert the transitions in the same way.

Change the default transition times from File / Preferences

Edit your clips first, remove all unwanted frames then insert the transition effects.

Looking at the tabs at the top, work your way through from the left ‘capture to the right share’

And yes you can fade in audio, default settings File / preferences.
Look at the panel left of preview screen for further editing modes.

Have you read some of the tutorials supplied by Ulead????

You really only need to render when you have completed all editing, this process creates a complete file of your project, which you use to burn a dvd.

I second the suggestion that you first read the manual or watch the tutorials before posing questions, some of which are actually answered in the manual.

The default duration of transitions and inserted stills (which include colour clips) can be changed in VS9 in the File > Preferences > Edit tab. It is slightly different in VS7 and 8 where you find 'File' but the rest is the same. Or when you have inserted either the colour clip or the transition AND with the colour or the transition selected/highlighted with the mouse, then up in the top left hand corner of the Edit screen, you will see a little counter window with the default time set in it. You can manually change the duration for each colour or transition you have highlighted.
