Split screen with customized border possible?
How to create a vertical border on a split screen, like in the Woodstock '69 movie?
I don't want the border to be all the way around the clip, just right down the middle, vertically between the two clips.
Is there a way to accomplish this in VS? (All I seem to be able to do is place the border all the way around.)

One way is to put a background on the main timeline of the colour you want. (See Graphic Color) Put the two clips on overlay tracks 1 and 2 and pull each into the shape you want.
Bear in mind that if you have recorded in 16:9, when you pull the clips into a vertical shape you will distort the original pictures.

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Thanks, this "workaround" works to provide the desired effect. Takes a little extra effort though.
May the current lack of "border control" be fixed in future VS editions.

Possibly. But the point is that VS provides the tools to do the job.

With all due respect, in this case, a workaround is not a tool, but the extra steps taken to overcome what is just not there, as it logically should be.

Why? There are a number of ways to achieve the same effect in VS. This does not mean Corel need to build a specific action to split a screen when it can be easily achieved with the actions already available. There is no logical requirement for a split screen.markguitre wrote:With all due respect, in this case, a workaround is not a tool, but the extra steps taken to overcome what is just not there, as it logically should be.

Re: Split screen with customized border possible?
I think you have misunderstood what this topic is all about. It is not about achieving a split screen; that is easy to do.
It is about customizing the border between a split screen(s). Right now, there is no option to place a border
only on a specific side or sides of the clip. You can only place it all the way around. If there were more border
options, the so-called Woodstock effect (split screen with a solitary vertical border between vids) could be had with a single click.

Re: Split screen with customized border possible?
If you feel so strongly about this - put it in Wishlist for VS X11.
I suggest you look at Brian Chalke's "a technique for making split screen in VideoStudio" on YouTube.
It would be useful if you could post an example of what you want. Incidentally I looked up "Woodstock Effect", it seems to be more about the tactical use of natural resources than a line on a screen.

Re: Split screen with customized border possible?
Hi
There are very few editing techniques that can be achieved with one click
I assume you have two video files 16:9, you wish to play both on the same frame.
Clearly you cannot play both in full so have to select an area to display.
You have an advantage over us as you know what you need to display.
But using the Crop tool can isolate a desired area
We can add the cropped video to our overlay tracks leaving a gap between them will create the border, we can resize the crop from the overlay track.
another tool may be the Picture – in Picture, could work.
Then Customise Motion may be suitable.
You could add both clips to different timelines no borders
Then add a Colour Clip (black) to 3rd timeline, resize as a vertical line
But there is no option to select two clips and blend as Woodstock effect (split screen with a solitary vertical border between vids)

This is shown in Brian's video example.
A background can also become a border if it is put in the main timeline.

Re: Split screen with customized border possible?
The posts have begun to be a little off-track and also somewhat redundant.
The Woodstock movie makes extensive use of split screen(s); but always with a single vertical (black) border in between the clips.
That's the border "effect" I was after, and the best way to do it for now is the original suggestion of Terfyn: to place whatever solid color on the main video track;
then crop two (or more) overlay clips so that the color peeks through as a border; the thickness of the border dependent on the degree of crop.
The wish (for the next VS) is that under borders options, you may simply choose to place the border exactly where you want.
Right now, the choice of placement is restricted to a border all the way around, or nothing.

Re: Split screen with customized border possible?
Hi
I have created a small test project showing some ideas to creating the split screen
I have used images to reduce the size to allow me to attach to the forum post. But works equally well with video
The first set is simply using full frame and repositioning on preview screen. I can leave a gap, but have then to choose the edges of my video, using a vertical line PNG image I can manipulate the frames.
The second set uses the cropping tool, now I can select any position within my image / video.
As I mentioned you have the advantage of viewing your video to choose the section to work with.
