I seem to have Message folders everywhere, none readable: where Ken said, where Kathy said, in AppData/Local.
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

Corel - Listen Up!

There is a complete thread of annoyed users (you know those people who keep you in business) because of your intrusive ad popups. I just purchased a number of products via upgrade (based on an EMAIL ad), and now I'm like the rest here - I can't stop the ad popups. And since I purchased numerous products, I have to go into each one to turn off. And of course, like everyone else, that doesn't work! Serious, this is:
  • Extremely Unprofessional for a company of your reputation
  • Annoying to the point I will never consider another upgrade, let alone new products
  • Driving business away from your products, not to them
  • The brainchild of an idiot (we get email ads, ads when we open your software and Operating System Popup ads - imagine our user experience if every software vendor did this!)
  • Makes you an embarrassment as a professional company (did you hire the guy from the 90's that ran the X10 spam ads)
  • I believe may put you in violation of GDPR, if considered via the intrusive nature of installing to the OS without permission
Act like an adult:
  • Apologize to all your customers
  • Push an update that removes these OS popups
  • Let people opt-in for email and program startup ads

In addition to all of this, there is the price, which keeps fluctuating.

This may help... copy and paste the following to a .reg file. Double click it and let it make these registry changes...

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Corel\CUH\Current Version]
"Communication"="disabled"

[Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Corel Update Helper"=-
"ParticleShop Update Helper"=-

Just yesterday I got an ad for one of the Corel stable -- it was not PSP, BTW. PSP nor any Corel app was open. Then I went to Task Mager and I saw that CUH (Corel Update Helper) was active. I closed the ad and CUH vanished from my op app list. So I then went to C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel and deleted the 'CUH' folder. Since then I have had no further popups in that corner, though I still see an ad for PSP 2020 when I close PSP 2018. Looks like CUH is the culprit.

You can also block Corel Update Helper with your firewall software. I always block it - along with most programs - and also remove it from all folders in which it appears in all Corel software. I don't get ad popups whether or not I have a Corel program opened. However, sometimes Corel (or PSP itself) seems to become aware that I have deleted those CUH files and when I install a later PSP version then my previous versions always start with a warning that I may be using pirated software. That, I understand, is because the newly installed version may have a way of determining that other installed versions have been altered from the original install - i.e., I have deleted all CUH stuff. And despite the warning that these versions won't work properly saving, etc., they acrually do work just fine. And the warning I get if opening them is no biggy because I am usually using my latest version anyway, and it won't start giving me pirate warnings until I install an even newer version. :-)

Similar to JoeB, I block all communications, To & From Corel, in my Router Firewall. Haven't had a popup Corel ad in years.

There is still a sticky on this subject. Look at viewtopic.php?p=371593#p371593 to see why the sticky has been disconnected from this longer discussion here.
