Can you playback audio tracks at faster and slower speeds?

I know you can do that with video, but what about a project that only has audio?

hi
If you create video file of your audio. (you may have to place a clip in the video timeline.)
use the video in new project.
alter playback speed
create sound file or split audio.

I haven't tried this but it should work.

Thanks, I tried this but it won't allow me to drag an audio clip into the video line.

You mean you have ONLY audio - no pictures at all ?? - in that case don't see how you would do what you want in UVS its a video editing package - there are quite a few audio packages that will do what you want.

Julia,
Your question as stated may be confusing.
Your original post states that your project only has audio. Does that mean an audio type file such as .mp3 or .wav? Since you state that you are trying to pull an audio clip and it doesn't go into the video line it sounds like what you are talking about. Video studio will only let you place a compatible object into certain parts of the timeline. You have two tracks (the one with a microphone and the one with the musical notes) where you can place audio files.
Why would you want to play it back faster or slower?
If you could, wouldn't the pitch change?

Trevor - I am not at home to try this but don't you lose the audio of a video clip once you change the speed?

I think I might know what you are asking Julia and I think I know what you are trying to explain Trevor but could you expand on what it is you are trying to do Julia?

The direct answer to your question as stated is no. Audio only plays at normal speed. As Trevor stated, you can split the audio from a video clip then alter the speed of the video clip but then you are out of sync with the audio that was once part of the video clip but the audio is still heard as normal.

When I speed up video clips I still get the sound - at the increased tempo and pitch certainly - but still there.

I'm sure Trevor will respond for himself - but the way I read his suggestion was to put the video with sound into the top video track - then speed it up and THEN split the audio from the picture and save the now speeded up audio file for use in the new project. BUT - this will not work as the split audio is grayed out when you increase the speed - BUT (again) - you can go to "Share" and "Create a sound file" which will save a .wav file at the increased tempo.

I know there are audio programs that do that, but I don't own them. I have Video Studio and just wanted to see if I could slow down CDs so I could figure out fast passages on the piano.

Hi All

Ok you are correct
Vs cannot playback audio except in real time.(whats real time)
But we can use VS to create an audio file that plays the track slower/faster.

This what I did:-

I placed the audio clip in the music track. (2min 27 sec)
I added a one second colour clip to the video timeline.(at least one clip is required)
From Share--Create Video File.(a thumb nail is placed in the library)
I remove the original audio and colour clips from the timelines.
I draged the new video thumbnail to the video timeline.
I clicked the video clip to highlight it, and selected the ‘playback Speed to 50%.
Video file length changed to 3min 54sec.
I then went to Share----Create Sound File----(select format.Wav)

You now have a new audio sound file that plays quite a bit slower than the original.

It does work, and if this is the only program you have, then use it to edit audio.

If you want to work on only audio files, check out freeware http://audacity.sourceforge.net
