PSP 2018 - Eraser not working

Post by Khuri »

As the topic says...

The eraser tool doesn't do anything for me (Version 20.0.0.132 x64).

You select it, the undo command shows "prepare for tool" ("Für Werkzeug vorbereiten" in German).
If you click on the image no erase action is registered in the undo history and nothing gets erased.

In the options the undo function is activated, with 250 steps per image.

Background eraser tool works though.

Can anyone confirm this?

The eraser works fine for me in version 20.0.0.132 x64. Have you tried resetting the workspace?

Here are some instructions. They reference X6 but they still apply to 2018. If you have customized your workspace, be sure to save your workspace first before resetting.

Oh, and just double checking to make sure you didn't import a workspace from a previous version of PSP as this will sometimes break things.

Thanks, I tried it.
Reset workspace first as in the guide, but no luck.

Then I checked all the options in the reset option, looks fresh as the first day (actually was a fresh installation anyway).

But the eraser tool is still not working.

That's too bad. I had hoped that would work. Just for fun you could try clicking on the eraser tool and then the Presets icon on the Tools Option tool-bar and then the curved arrow (2nd icon on the right) to reset the tool to default.

If all else fails you could place a support request with Corel.

Thanks for your Reply Kathy.

I've found out what's causing this, can reproduce the problem and sent it to Corel as I'm not sure if it's intentional or a bug...

In the Preferences under the "Display/Caching" tab (I don't know how it's named in the English version) you can check/uncheck an option to use your "Workspace drive" or something.

If you uncheck it and restart PSP, the eraser stops working. If you check it again and restart, it works again.

Note: On previous versions of PSP X9 or older it surely worked... with unchecked [ ].

Wow, amazing that you discovered that. I am able to duplicate your findings and have also filed a bug report with Corel.

Indeed, which was why I unchecked it in first place. Because I have no idea what that checkbox/option actually is supposed to do ;)

Scratch disk (or swap disk) is a way of letting PSP spread out its work to other harddrives saving space when working with several large files. Not as necessary today with most computers. But it was handy when it first came out an PSP was still only 32-bit. It's meant to be set to a secondary harddrive and not the main one. When it's on the main one it can really start slowing things down. But yeah, normally easy to ignore.

EDIT: By the way, I was experiencing this on one of my two computers. But I kept forgetting to look into it. Thank you so much for finding and reporting your findings here. :D Now I'm working again.
