Importing video crashes VideoStudio 10

Post by Darkuni »

Hey everyone ...

I was unable to get satisfaction from Corel's Technical Support - and I am a bit frustrated.

I have a screen capture tool (I realize VideoStudio includes one - but I'm not interested in WMV files) that comes part of the newly released Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate Suite. It creates MP4 files as its output.

These files play fine on any player I throw it at - but when imported into VideoStudio, it unceremoniously crashes. If VLC, Windows own media player, etc. didn't play the file just fine - I wouldn't be complaining :)

Customer Support at Corel was able to perfectly recreate the crash on their end.

I don't feel I'm out of line expecting VideoStudio to open MP4 files - but essentially I was instructed by Tech Support to convert the file to something else THEN import it. I did not find that a satisfactory solution - so I'm here; hoping to find a way to get this "what I consider a bug" in front of a more technical person.

I am running Windows 10, 64-Bit with the latest build of VideoStudio. I have not installed any media or "codec packs" that might interfere. I can provide other specs if it will help.

The video file itself can be found here: http://www.monroeworld.com/misc/corel/

The results of importing will result in a long hanging of the app with an eventual crash. Doesn't matter HOW you add the video (drag and drop, menus, etc.) the end result is the same.

Here are the details according to VLC:

I appreciate any help or information. Be happy to provide answers to questions leading to a resolution.

Thank you!

Hi

Viewing the supported formats list
https://www.videostudiopro.com/en/produ ... quirements

There is no entry for mp4a, I would suspect that it is this audio format that is causing the problem.
The video stream sizes are also non standard, I don’t understand the 1920 x 1090 size, the frame rate of 29.999032 is also strange.

Are you able to set the capture software to use 1920 x 1080 x 30fps with a different audio format, maybe MPEG ACC Audio without the (mp4a) option.

Otherwise your only option is to convert the video.

Hi

MediaInfo shows the problem MP4 file you linked to as variable rate. Some varieties of MP4 with variable frame rate do not play nicely with VS. My suggestion is to convert to a fixed rate MP4 file. Handbrake gets good reviews here.

Thanks a bunch, everyone! I will see what I can do with the screen capturing software settings. I'll post any findings here - maybe help someone else out.

Some very strange results. Oh, and forgive the irony of complaining about having to convert a video created BY a product whose sole purpose is to CONVERT video. Standing high on one's principles often results in a falling injury ... Anyway ...

The screen capture utility has very few configuration options; FPS, "quality" ... but nothing for codec-related stuff.

I attempted several different captures - full screen, various custom screen sizes - with and without audio. Subsequent video file codec inspections were all over the place. The audio stream seems locked in regardless - but the video stream? Apparently anything goes ... wild resolutions, even STRANGER FPS (presume all this is due to variable encoding).

Even more strange? Every ... single ... one ... Loaded right into VideoStudio. No issues. Yet the original video still dies on the vine when trying to import it.

I guess we're looking at an oddball "isolated incident" - and if anyone is at fault for the variety of success - it is Wondershare. Time to go harass them. :)

Again, thank you all for your assistance.

Hi

Out of interest I downloaded and installed the Wondershare
Used to capture video but limited to one minute for trial version

I had no problems with my first few attempts.
Details of video properties.

Full screen:-

MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1680 x 1050, 30 fps
Frame-based
H.264 Baseline Profile Video: 1064 Kbps
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 4 Kbps

1280 x 720 frame size:-

MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 30 fps
Frame-based
H.264 Baseline Profile Video: 1059 Kbps, 16:9
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 4 Kbps

Screen recordings at Medium Quality, at full quality changes the data rate to 1212Kbps.

The properties I see look normal for a MP4, Don’t know why your properties look unusual?
Inserted to VS no problems....Strange…

Did you do any "custom" screen captures? If you do full screen, things seem to be "right". if you go with a custom capture window, numbers start getting wacky.

As I mentioned above, subsequent attempts seemed to work (even custom ones). Something special about that ONE file apparently.

I appreciate you going out of your way to test with the actual tool.

They solicit feedback, so I'm going to ask for a CBR/VBR option - had the file been constant bit rate, I'm wondering if I would have seen the crash.

It's not the bitrate that causes VS any problem, it's a variable frame rate. VS is set to use the frame rates prescribed in agreed international standards for specific formats. For NTSC video, for example, the agreed acceptable frame rates are 15 fps, 29.97 fps (commonly called 30 fps) and 59.94 fps (commonly called 60 fps). There are higher and lower acceptable frame rates, but these are the core rates around those you are using. So VS sees your clip with a non-standard frame rate of 29.999032 and rejects it, even though it is very close to the standard 29.97 fps.

Hi
As my earlier post, I did a custom frame size of 1280 x 720
All video properties looked standard, video studio did not crash
