Rotate .NEF Files before editing

Post by Iamimdoc »

I posted this 2 years ago with PSP 8. I am now using the 2018 Version and still think this is an issue and I wonder if there is a solution at this time

When viewing a directory of photos in Manage Section, I am unable to rotate .nef files. I think this also occurs with .psd files. Jpegs can be rotated, however. Thus a directory (containing some files shot with camera rotated) cannot have all files viewed in proper orientation. Files can be rotated in Edit Area

Corel help desk had no solution.

Am I missing something? - this seems to be that a feature all would want (the ability to quickly orient everything so see what you actually want/need) to edit. Trivial to do in PS or if you have a JPEG file

Is there a workaround outside of opening each file one at a time or having to use another raw editor (ie spending more time)

Thanks

I am looking for global (all at one time solution)

Best I can do is shoot RAW and JPEG simultaneously (camera can do this), rotate the JPEGs and use them as a reference for which file to edit

But since After Shot can do it (and much quicker than PSP 2018) and PS (and others) can do it, it seems PSP 2018 should be able to do it. I just don't get having to look at images 90 degrees out of whack, craning head and neck, etc...

Thanks anyway

I think that what Aftershot and PS are doing is showing a rotated thumbnail of the Raw file.
I prepared a desktop folder of CR2 files (Canon raw) of vertically taken images and had not used auto rotate from the camera settings. and looked at it in windows Explorer - all were shown in landscape mode.
#When I viewed them as thumbnails in Irfanview they were all showing as vertically yet I had done nothing to the files (so the raw files were still untouched but somehow the camera orientation was embedded in the raw file. )
Viewing the folder in the organiser in PSP 2018 and X9 again all the raw files were auto rotated in Edit, Essentials and Manage modes.
In Digital Photo Professional (canon's raw processor) all images were landscape just as viewed in Explorer. If I edited it and rotated it and saved it with a different name, then both the original and the new copy showed as rotated but in Explorer there was no change.

It would seem that NEF files do not have this orientation value set.
It makes sense that you cannot physically rotate and save a raw file as using the digital negative analogy it would be like cutting a negative out of a strip so you can rotate it to view it easily. The raw file is the raw data from the camera without any conversion into an image. Anything you see thereafter is a conversion of that data into a viewable image.

I use Nikon and always shoot raw. (NEF). Regardless of what I'm doing they always show in the 'as shot' orientation. FWIW I use Nikon's own NX-D for conversions.
