The one thing I don't get...

Post by 357mag »

I love this Paint Shop Pro X9 especially after using paint.net for about a year or more. Wonderful program. But the programmers left out the ability for the user to clear the recent file history.

I've been looking for a way to purge the history list but have found no way to do it.

So what happens when a guy has 589 recent files? Does it just grow until the software bursts?

You can limit the number of recent files show in Preferences>General Program Preferences>Miscellaneous. But it doesn't go above 10, so I'm not sure where you are seeing more than that (or even if you are seeing more than that) in the Recent Files option. That said, if you want to clear it you can set the preferences to 1 and restart the program. It's not quite cleared but only the most recently opened file will show.

Well the Recent Files List in your registry is here: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Corel\PaintShop Pro\X9\Recent File List

Quick note, PSP reads from this key when it starts, and then it writes the results back when it closes. What this means is you have to clear the list while PSP is closed.

So there are any number of ways to handle this. You could delete all of the values manually every time you wanted to clear the list. You can export a blank version of this registry key and then run it every time you wanted to blank out the registry. t

I found the Miscellaneous entry. Thank You. If I did the registry tweak would it be possible to set it to 0?

Hi

If you set to “0” you might as well delete the Recent Files button

Right click the workstation for Customise
Select the File menu, not from Customise but top left of workstation.
Now right click Recent Files for Delete

I do not know how to show the button other than resetting the program?

What do you mean the workstation? Where is that?

Manage? Adjust? Edit?

He means to right click any area of your PSP workspace. This will bring up a menu and click Customize. This will open another window. Leave that window open and go to File in the upper left corner of PSP and click on it. Then you can click on Recent Files and drag it into the open window. That will remove Recent Files option from the File menu. However, once you do that you cannot get it back unless you reset PSP back to its original condition when it was first installed, and that will cause you to lose all of the settings you might have made before. You're better off just to leave it where it is and ignore it. I don't see what is gained by removing it.

Also, if you don't know about customizing PSP then perhaps you should read about it first in the Help file.

There is no menu that is brought up called Customize in PSP X9 when you right-click.

I don't want to remove the recent files option. I was only wondering if a guy could totally clear the history list.

But if you have to have one entry in there at all times it's not a big deal. But other companies allow you to completely purge all history.

I did not say that a menu called Customze comes up when you right click within the PSP work area. I said a menu would come up and you are supposed to click Cutomize within that menu. Customize is 3/4 of the way down the menu that opens. If you don't get any context menu opening when you right click in the workspace then you have a problem (unless you have your mouse set for left-handed use, in which case you would have to left-click the mouse to get the context menu).

Another way to get to customize is to click on View>Customize. Again, this is all explained in the Help file, under Customizing.

The only menu that comes up says Floating, Docking, Auto-Hide, and Hide. That's all.

You must be using an older version.

In the View menu on top Customize is greyed out.

See attached. I right-clicked with my mouse in the workspace just barely above what is the upper left corner of the popup menu window and got this menu. The white arrow points to Customize.

The workspace, by the way, is the space where you work on your images in the Edit tab. You'll see it is highlighted at top right in the image I have attached.

If you're not getting that then you might have to reset your PSP. I suspect that you're not clicking in the workspace but on the title bar of some palette, which is giving you the option to float, dock, etc., the palette. However, if the Customize item is greyed out in your View menu then you likely have a problem and should reset PSP by starting it while holding the Shift Key down. If you have customized your workspace you should save the workspace first so that you can reload it after resetting PSP.

Customize will be greyed out if you are using Manage or Adjust modes. You must go to Edit mode to get View > Customize and if that does not work in your Edit mode then as Joe has said something is wrong. Try starting with Shift held down to reset your program to its default.
