Being asked by Win 10 to run setup for PSP 8!

Post by terrypin »

Windows 10 did a major update this morning. When I start PSP 8 (decades old but I'm happy with it, largely through familiarity) I get this message:

The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
Insert the 'Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8' disk and click OK
.

I've been trying to insert a screenshot image, or a URL to it. Keep getting message about 'It was not possible to determine the dimensions ...' It's a 410 x 322 JPG uploaded to Dropbox. I'll try it once more as plain text:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/pgf0j0b5dgmh9 ... 1.jpg?dl=0

If I cancel out of all that (see screenshot if the site allows it!), ignoring other stuff about fatal errors and installation failing, PSP 8 (8.10) comes up, apparently quite normal in appearance and layout. I've no idea what's going on here but obviously I want to fix it. I'm reluctant to use the CD except as a last resort because I'm guessing that would install the original, whch was then updated and then patched. What hassle.

Any insights or suggestions please?

First of all, PSP8 is very old software and not supposed to be compatible with Windows 10.
I can only suggest you uninstall PSP8 then reinstall and use in a different compatibility mode.
The message is telling you it can't find the installer for the programme. You may have to give your HDD a PSP clean.

Hi Terry,
I had the same initial problem that the Creators Update (version 1703) wanted to get somethng off the CD to be able to run.
It worked quite OK in the Anniversary (version 1607).
After inserting the CD a number of times to get it running it either started behaving or I did a remove and reinstall and now it runs correctly.
The list of paintshop pro versions :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_P ... o_releases
does not show what the differences were between 8.00 and 8.10.

You can also search for old versions of paintshop pro and there are some archiving sites devoted to these, but I find the best is to learn to use one of teh latest versions. I am using X9 more and more.
I had mainly used X2 and X4 , then X2 and X7 , and now X2 and X9. But since leaving version 8 I have not looked back as the later versions have so much more to offer.
Systems available Win7, Win 8.1,Win 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.2007 & version 20H2 Build 19042.867

Thanks Paul. The good news is that impatience got the better of caution and I fed Win 10 the PSP 8 setup CD it asked for (via Add/Remove programs > Repair). Happily PSP 8 has been starting and working OK since then.

Might get a few more years out of it...

Thanks Maureen, but I know it's old (so am I!) but I'm comfortable with it. And it was running sweetly until I received the blessing of the Creator's Update.

Thanks Kathy. Not surprisingly, those don't go back as far as PSP 8. But I use Revo Uninstaller to do thorough uninstalls.
