PSP 9 failing to install on Win 10

Post by arturox »

Evening folks.

This is a subject that's been discussed before, both on and off Forums, so today I've spent/wasted a lot of time searching/trying to find a solution, but to no avail...

A short while ago the MOBO on my old PC running Win 7 Pro gave up living, it was an old machine and not worth spending the required lolly to get it repaired, so I've got a new one, the only major bummer, it's supplied with Win 10 and only Win 10... Well two choices W10 home or Pro.
It's worth pointing out I'm not a total newby using Win 10, my Laptop/notebook has Win 10 as the OS. (And I have Jasc PSP 9.01 on it).

(JASC) PSP 9.01 is my PSP of choice, so I attempted an install... I appeared to do most of the install, but failed with a freeze while "Registering modules"
I left it in that ticking state for 30 minutes before quitting the action through the task manager.

PSP9 showed as being installed but obviously not installed enough to work.
Uninstalled it.

Rebooted and started again, same old, same old even after trying as administrator and in various compatibily modes... Same old failure at the end part of the "Registering modules" bit of the install.

Are there any new thoughts, possible answers to this problem?

Thanks
Dave

FWIW. Corel PSP X8 wouldn't install either, but I worked out a solution for that and it will install now. But it doesn't make any difference to the PSP 9 install attempts.

A new go at installing...

Started the PSP 9.0 install
Made no changes to anything, like where or what it installs.

Processed through the actions to the very last section of Registering modules, the action ceased.

Checked Task manager, only one instance of action with the PSP9 installer.
After a while, nothing still happening I manually ended the PSP 9 Installer task.

Went to the Installer CD and installed the 9.01 update, and that completed its process okay.

I ran PSP 9, it ran as far as the splash screen containing the legend "Starting up" and that was it, just sat there doing SFA so eventually I ended the task.

From the disc did a repair install, that processed okay, but in the end no change.

Looking in Program Files at the PSP install it's there, but obviously without the final Module registrations being completed it's not going to play the game.

Ran an app called "WinMerge" to do a file by file comparison of the errant W10 PSP9 install and a good PSP9 install I have on the Win 10 Notebook.

An eye aching exercise, but non-the-less interesting, in that the errant W10 install was missing dozens of Python files, and I equalised the two versions in the hope it might help, but obviously not, because of the remaining Unregistered Modules.

So my last go...
I went through the Registry looking for Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9 keys of both the installs, then I compared them.

Aside from severe eye ache, there's quite a number of Registry entries in the good version, that don't exist in the errant W10 version.

I do not intend to compare and list them line for line, nor do I intend to Export the PSP 9 keys from the Good install reg and Import them into the bad install...

Maybe one day... I've been playing with this .... for three day and I'm tired of it.

What a PITA.

I needed to do some graphics work today and without PSP 9 it really is a pain.
I started doing the work in PSP X8, but as per usual I didn't get very far... Same old, same old...

Took the work to another machine that has PSP 9... Easy peasy, took no time at all.

Grrrrr!

This type of issue can be a result of many issues. My old i3 laptop running Win 7 stalls when a program looks for Open GL. And wont accept the latest version. Later programs are looking for programs that have been written for newer computers! And older programs simply can't work with the latest programs! Change for change sake is leaving a lot of programs out in the cold.

Short of upgrading everything all I can offer is a shoulder to cry on. :?

Thanks for the shoulder...

Aside from the inconvenience of not having PSP 9 to use on this new machine... What really urinates me off is the fact that I've had PSP 9 installed and running okay on my Win 10 Notebook computer without any unknown problems for a while now.

I've got Jasc PSP 8.10 (No X) installed now, and that'll have to do for the moment... (Obviously can't load any of my old PSP 9 files, but it'll do for new work)

ATM. I really don't have any more time to waste flatulating around with this problem...

Of course it would be interesting to have an external app that could monitor the install as it progressed, and then list the modules that didn't get registered.
It appears from watching the install splash screen that most of the modules are registered as the indicator bar for that part of the install process gets at least 90/95 percent of the way along the bar.

Ah well, I guess there is no answer to this problem, I'll have to look for another solution as the latest incarnations of PSP are such clunkware.

If I can be bothered, I guess Virtal box is the only answer, but that just adds another layer of Clunk for the OS to chew on. :-(

Hi - A newbie to this forum but a longtime fan of PSP9. I had used it so long I could breeze thru things without thinking about it. I knew it would happen eventually but dreaded the day when it finally died on me. I had actually purchased two newer versions but could never get happy with them.

I wish I had some good news to offer, but alas, I don't. The kicker is that PSP9 ran beautifully on my Windows10 machine for 1.5 years, until Creators Update came along in early June. Immediately after that update installed, I couldn't run PSP9, couldn't repair it, couldn't uninstall it, couldn't reinstall it. I fought with it as long as I could, and cried along with a bunch of others in the same situation I found across various boards. Nobody I found had an answer.

Bottom line, I had to have something so I bought PSPX9. I actually saw your posting while using this forum to learn that one of my favorite and most-used functions in PSP9 is not available in PSPX9. Oh well, that's life. I'm sure I will eventually get over it and learn to like PSPX9, but I sure hate to be forced into replacing software I love just because of a misguided Windows update. Good luck with whatever solution you find.

I couldn't get PSP 9 to work on win 10 either. I switched to Affinity Photo.

I tried Affinity Photo, had problems with it, and additionally didn't like the UI so got a refund.

A thought occurred earlier today.

PSP 9 works okay on my Laptop running Win 10.
I have a bootable clone backup of the Laptop Win 10 install on a portable SSD, so I connected the clone disk to this W10 Desktop machine and rebooted it into the Clone W10, it all went okay and the few apps I tested obviously worked okay.
But not the PSP 9 clone. It fails to start in exactly the same way as the PSP 9 installed native on this machine.

We go back to the laptop and it works okay. Something strange is going on, I wonder what?

That also sets me thinking, If I did install virtual Box and then install PSP9 inside that, would I still have an unusable PSP 9?
Weird business methinks!

Could it be something to do with the fact that the laptop is running W10 Home, while this desktop is running W10 Pro?

Intel did an update recently for the graphics, and a graphic driver change is often the reason for older PSP versions to not install or to stop working with the error ‘registering modules’.
I suggest you check your graphics drivers and roll back to the previous one and see if that fixes it. When I've suggested this to others who have had this same problem over the past few months, they were able to get PSP to work or install again.

I've noticed this suggestion variously when searching the net for a possible solution.
However...
My problem is... This is a brand new machine, only built and purchased a few weeks ago so the drivers in it are the only ones... There's nothing to roll back to.

Unless of course someone knows different?

Thanks for your thoughts, appreciated.

I don't have the new Intel graphic drivers on my two systems that run PSPX, so can't check the version for you. Intel does not support the Intel graphics on my Laptop anymore and my PC has NVIDIA graphics. I have the latest Win 10 [up to date with all patches] on both systems and PSPX works perfectly.

Perhaps you could test by switching to generic MS drivers, which is what my old Laptop has to use now, or search online for an older Intel driver that suits your system and see if that works.
One problem you may have, if you do roll back, is newer updates trying to replace with latest driver again.

From what I've read Intel put out an update in approx. March and that's when some people started having issues with PSP9 and PSPX. The ones that had contact with me, were all getting the ‘registering modules’ error. I know for sure one user I was helping, rolled her Intel HD driver back to Microsoft Basic and her problems went away. Others also rolled back, with success, but I don't know to what driver.

I suggest making a restore point first so you can always revert back if required.

If you don't want to use an older driver, or a basic driver, or can't, then I think it would be unlikely you'll be able to install PSP9. From all my research online and from an old article in the Corel Knowledgebase, that error is put down to the graphics driver.

Well, I sourced an Intel graphics driver that will still function on W10 and 'Skaby Lake' that's a small step back from the default one installed on this new machine.

Totally uninstalled PSP 9.
Installed new driver.
Rebooted.
Installed PSP 9 and patch.

No change, it starts to the splash screen and thereafter does nothing as before.

Maybe the new drive wasn't back far enough... It went from the default 21.20.16.4627 to my install of 21.20.16.4450

Anyone have any idea how much change in the driver is required?

Thanks

I know, its not really an solution but a simple workaround: Put in an additional graphics card from AMD or NVidia. No Intel driver, no problems.
