Video capture (audio missing) problems
I just installed the newest MF4. I am trying to capture a video from my Cannon DV recorder. It is plugged into the composit video jacks on my PC. I can get to the capture video screen and it shows what is playing on the camera but . . . there is no sound. I have tried configuring each of the options available in the Advanced Options / Video and Audio Cature Settings screen and still can't get the sound. What am I doing wrong? This is probably a silly question
, but I am just a newbie to this. Thanks.

There's 2 things to check:
Windows or your "Sound Cards" mixer RECORD settings.
Your soundcard has to be assigned to record on the audio port that you
have the audio rca plugs going into. Usually the mixer's default to recording on the microphone port.
In your case it most likely would be the "Line In" on the soundcard.
All mixers have 2 settings, the PLAYBACK Settings & RECORD Settings
so first I would make sure the record setting in the mixer is correct.
(You usually click in a checkbox to assign the correct port)
Then in MF under advanced you also select that same port if it isn't
already set on it.
MovieFactory is linked to the output of your mixer settings. So they
both have to be set to the same port.
Most likely because your not hearing sound it's NOT coming through the
windows/soundcards mixer or your audio jacks are plugged into the
wrong port on the sound/capture card.
First, set the windows/soundcard ports then the MF ports.
Why aren't you recording via firewire?
Into the DV.avi format DV-Type1
Hope this helps,

OK thanks for the tips. Here are a couple of other issues. First, I'm a non-tech kinda guy and don't really know how to even check my sound card's mixer RECORD settings. Can you help me there?
Perhaps it has to do with the fact that I have an HP Media Center PC with a Hauppauge WINTv PVR PCI II Card. I have heard that MF4 has trouble with them and there is a patch out. But I can't use the patch because I am still evaluating the product.
Also, I am evaluating another product (My DVD Plus from Sonic) and it has no trouble finging the video and audio and capturing the file. So I am absolutely sure the cables are plugged into the correct ports - a secondary composite input. MyDVD has a lot of problems though and often creates Mpg files with corrupt data that does not make nice DVD's.
I am intrigued by the firewire. I can purchase a cable from my local BestBuy store and connect it to the firewire port on the PC. Is the DV.avi format DV-Type1 better than mpg?? What program actually captures the video/audio then - would it still be MF4? Or is there a windows utility to do that. And does MF4 recognize that format to insert it into a project? Dumb questions - sorry.

I'm not sure about your capture card working and I don't have one of those
but reading other posts I understand it's much better to capture with the
Hauppauge WINTv PVR PCI II Card's software from their company.
Then import those videos into MovieFactory.
It would help you alot to read and search through MF forum and the
VideoStudio forum. Many helpful posts.
Read GeorgeW posts, he has a similar device I think.
If Sonic captured video then it's the audio setting in MF4 under the
advanced tab and features to change the audio port to record on.
I think your windows mixer is set properly because Sonic set it's mixer
to the windows mixer. Don't know though.
In MF4 go to the capture screen, click on the "Down" arrow to display the
Advanced button.
Click on the Advanced and select
"Video and Audio Capture Property Settings"
The next screen 1st tab says "Source", in the Audio section very bottom
you select the audio source to record from. When I just checked mine it
was set to "Mic" which isn't correct. My setting is "TAD" yours most
likely will be "Line-In". That may depend on your soundcard.
HP Media Center PC with a Hauppauge WINTv PVR PCI II Card sounds
like a nice machine. See if there's any documentation on the hauppauge
software program that records video. It's supposed to be very good.

Thanks maddrummer3301. I checked out everything and all the advanced settings seem to be correct - set to the correct video and audio sources. I am beginning to think it is really the Ulead problem with the Hauppauge card and they won't let me have the patch because I am only running the demo version of the program.
And I don't want to purchase it if I don't know if it works.
I sent an email to Hauppauge about the problem and have not yet received a reply. I also joined their user forum out of the UK and posted a message there for some help. Still waiting on that one too. So I am in limbo for awhile here.
Do you know anything about DocumentViewer.msi? Windows sure wants to install this facility but can't find the windows installation package. I get a message about wanting to configure it and then an error saying the file can't be found every time I start up a program that views a video file (Media Center, MF4, MyDVD or Media Player). I contacted HP and they said they could not give out that file (????) Seems kind of strange to me. Any suggestions?

Just a suggestion, really look into capturing using your camcorder via
the firewire port. The video is very good and firewire is the standard
for capturing. More compatible. You control the camcorder using
the capturing software.
Use the other analog device for VHS or Hi8mm tapes etc.
Since your using a trial version tryout VideoStudio 9.
In the VideoStudio Forum post the question how many people are
capturing sucessfully with that device.
Also, mention you are using the trial version. That makes a difference.

Thanks again maddrummer3301 (MD)
<<Just a suggestion, really look into capturing using your camcorder via
the firewire port.>>
I got a firewire and tried it. Works beautifully. The entire 1hr 23min video came over and was incorporated into the project perfectly with no stopping video. I was even able to then go in and add chapters and scenes with MF4.
<<Since your using a trial version tryout VideoStudio 9.>>
Once I got my camera connected, MF4 saw it as a capture device and was able to do the job. So I don't need the facilities of VS9. The only slight glitch was that during capture, the video shown in MF4 was a bit shakey - almost like there was too much going on to keep the video going correctly. But once the capture was completed and I played the movie back, it was fine. I guess I can live with that.
I still have not gotten a response from Hauppauge. Either from tech support or their user forum in the area of pre-sales questions. Maybe they don't want to sell their product much? I dont know.
Since you seem to be very knowlegeable about MF4 I would like to ask one more question. I want to create a project with a title screen as the main menu. With buttons like a commercial DVD such as Play Movie, Scene Selection and Additional Features. Then on the Additional Features menu (sub-menu) I would like to put small snippets of video like Directors Commentary, Meet the Cast, etc. How do you create a sub-menu like that? I can't find anything in the product to let me do that but it's probably right in front of my eyes. Thanks for the help.

You need DVD WOrkShop 2 for this type of project. DMF only creates thumbnail menus and submenus are generated from chapters.daddyo1949 wrote:I want to create a project with a title screen as the main menu.
