Jerky 4K video encoded with h265
Hi,
Just upgraded to VideoStudio x10. Working on the UHD project (3840x2160) at 29,97 fps.
Source files:
- iPhone UHD (3840x2160) 29,97 fps movs (h264 at 45 Mbits) ;
- Panasonic camera UHD (3840x2160) 25 fps mp4s (h264 at 60 Mbits);
Problem: Output video files produced with h265 codec look jerky (I produced 8bit UHD files at different coding rates). I cannot decide why - everything looks all right (fps, etc.), but video is not smooth somehow. It jerks on each frame (kind of stroboscopic effect).
First I thought my computer was not powerful enough and downloaded some sample h265 files. Everything is playing correctly, except 10bits UHD at 60 fps. Those ones lose sync with the soundtrack sometimes. But even they look better, then the video that I produced. Actually, they look gorgeous!!! 8bits UHD even at 60 fps use only between 20-30% of CPU.
The same footage encoded with H264 looks awesome.
Does that sound familiar to anyone?

Re: Jerky 4K video encoded with h265
I would export both source files separately. To determine if it can be on one of the two formats. Also times not in format H.265 but in H.264. Here is a small 4K with VSX10. I know no jerks. https://youtu.be/zFfBxiqlrNQ
Sorry, I have no other solution. Except to convert the MOV file before to a MP4 file.

Re: Jerky 4K video encoded with h265
Pavel -- this may sound a bit strange, but does your computer also have an Intel on-board GPU as well as the NVidia one? I ask because some people have found that using the Intel GPU seems to work better in producing smooth h.265 video than the seemingly more powerful NVidia ones.
The only other thing I can think of is to wonder whether the whole of your new video looks jerky, or only parts of it. I ask since you are using a mixture of PAL (25 fps) and NTSC (29.97 fps) video. Depending on which fps you chose for the final video, some at least will not look 'normal', especially if there is a lot of action in the video. This is because if you make the project a PAL video, then Video Studio will delete 4.97 frames every second to make the NTSC video confirm to PAL frame rates. And if you chose NTSC, then VS has to duplicate frames to bring the 25 FPS of PAL up to the 29.97 fps of NTSC.

Re: Jerky 4K video encoded with h265
to JWolters:
Do you mean to remix MOVs to MP4s? What does it give exactly? Movs have exactly the same codec inside as mp4.
I tried to do what you said about exporting separately: problem seems to be in the VideoStudio codec when I export it in 29,97 fps or 30 fps. This is when I see this jerky video. When I export to 25 it looks actually better. And if I export it to 59,94 fps, it starts looking like it is supposed to.
And as I said, exporting to H264 - the result always looks good.
To Ken Berry:
yes I have both GPUs. I can chose which one to use when playing files, but I do not know how to chose the GPU while encoding.
About mixing standards: I create final 29,97 fps file, and it seems that both parts (29,97 and 25fps) look equally jerky.
I will keep diging.
Cheers,
Pavel

Re: Jerky 4K video encoded with h265
I looked at the final video and calculated number of frames. 30.
So, it seems, that something is wrong with the playback. Still, cannot understand what is happening, because all my source files play back correctly.

Before opening VS right click the VS icon on the desktop. In the dropdown menu you should see near the top "Run with graphics processor" and that will give you the choice to run it with the Intel processor instead of the NVidia.Pavel_Kolotilov wrote:yes I have both GPUs. OK, I do not have this option in the dropdown menu. I will try to find the way change the graphic processor... In registry somethere, probably.

Any reason why you want h265? Why not stick with h264?

Did you install the intel GPU drivers?Pavel_Kolotilov wrote:OK, I do not have this option in the dropdown menu. I will try to find the way change the graphic processor... In registry somethere, probably.
I had them but removed as I found that my GT430 works much better for my needs.

Re: Jerky 4K video encoded with h265
I have a huge collection of family videos since the 90s and they take a lot of space. So far I used 28 Mbits H264 with my HD videos, so I figured out that if I start creating 60 Mbits H264, I will run out of space fastaljimenez wrote:Any reason why you want h265? Why not stick with h264?
And just a because h265 is the one of the few differences between videostudio X8 and x10 versions. At least, the ones I really use. If I can't use it, why did I upgrade?
But you are right, for the time being I will have to stick to h264, as neither my media player or TV cannot handle h265 anyway.
I have one monitor hooked to nvidia card, and another to Intel. It is done mainly to allow Cyberlink Powerdirector and Media Player Classic to see the Intel chip.asik1 wrote: Did you install the intel GPU drivers?

Re: Jerky 4K video encoded with h265
About the "Run with graphics processor" issue. It looks like this is an eNvidia driver feature. I tried to switch it ON but it does not appear in my right-buttom menu. I upgraded to the latest driver build, but still do not see it. I looked through the forums on the internet, and a lot of people say that it is a notebook feature, and it does not show on desktop computer. I do not know, if it is true or not.
So, I will have to figure out how to do it some other way.
Cheers,
Pavel

If both graphics units are connected to the monitor, the switchover takes place in the device manager. To do this, link the system control to the desktop. Start the system control and go to the device manager.Pavel_Kolotilov wrote:OK, I do not have this option in the dropdown menu. I will try to find the way change the graphic processor... Here is a small "what I need to do description" for switching. But unfortunately in German language. As a Norwegian, you may understand something. Here the link.

I can try to do it, by it means that I will lose one of my monitors every time I need to choose one graphic card. I can try anyway and see if it can solve h265 problem.JWolters wrote: If both graphics units are connected to the monitor, the switchover takes place in the device manager.
