is this sticky bug (.jpeg extension) fixed in psp x9 ?
hi,
i use psp x8 64bits.
when i save a file with .jpeg extension, psp always creates a .jpg duplicate version !
i assume PSP x8 does not understand that .jpeg is a common extension !
is this sticky bug fixed in further release like X9, x10beta ? because it is not fixe in x8 updated !
best regards

Re: is this sticky bug (.jpeg extension) fixed in psp x9 ?
I can't say why PSP exhibits that behaviour but would speculate that it's a leftover from one of the very early JASC versions of PSP when the program might have been used by those with early versions of Windows (like 3.1). In the early days DOS (and early Windows versions which were just a UI interface to DOS) were limited to file names in 8.3 format (max 8 character file name, max 3 character extension). So I can envision the PSP developers ensuring that people using .jpeg extensions actually had a file in a named format that the OS would recognize, so created a duplicate .jpg file. So I don't actually see it as a bug. But that's just my speculation.
BTW, Mac machines were not subject to the 3 character extension limit so could recognize .jpeg extensions.
In any event, why do you want to save with .jpeg extension? While it's a known extension (the original extension by the consortium that developed the format) it's not nearly as commonly used as .jpg (for the reasons above which caused .jpg to become the common usage given the widespread use of PC machines). Whether using .jpeg or .jpg there is no difference in the actual image file or the image information contained in the file.

it is not I who produce the .jpeg file.JoeB wrote:In any event, why do you want to save with .jpeg extension? there are many other devices (camera, video export...) or old software or pictures CD bank who provide Jpeg image with this extension.
Maybe other OS too (linux, apple) where the 3 letters wasn't a limit.
The fact is, when i open a genuine tooo.jpeg then i saved it, PSP creates a duplicate tooo.jpg !

Ahh is what you mean that you start with :
image.jpeg
Load it into PSP, save it as a jpg and instead of overwriting and converting the jpeg it leaves you with
image.jpeg
image.jpg
ie two versions of the same jpg image with that difference in extensions.
Tested - I renamed the extension on two files from .jpg to .jpeg and loaded them into PSP X9
used paint brush to mark them then did a Save As with one and a Save with the other. Both saved over the .jpeg files and kept the .jpeg extension. No duplicate .jpg files were formed.
Test in PSP X8 and same thing kept the jpeg extension, no duplicate files.
I REPEAT" NO DUPLICATE FILES"
I do not get duplicate files in PSP X8 or PSP X9

so it happens again in X9 !? X9 create a duplicata (not a doublon, but a backup thing) because it forget to erase the original .jpeg and created the new modified in a .jpg extension.
hope it will be fixe in X10 !

Are you by chance talking about auto preserve? File -> Preferences -> General Program Preferences -> Auto PreserveMichael REMY wrote: (not a doublon, but a backup thing)

Re: is this sticky bug (.jpeg extension) fixed in psp x9 ?
If you open a file with a .jpeg extension and do Save or Save As ,saving in the same folder as the original AND with the same name as the original, PSP appears to save the file with a .jpg extension. This way it does not overwrite the original. Therefore you still have the original (.jpeg) as well as the modified version you worked on in PSP (.jpg extension). However, if you open a .jpeg image and modify it, and save it in the same folder as the original BUT with a slightly different name from the original, then PSP will save it with the .jpeg extension. It does not create a duplicate of that modified version with a .jpg extension.Michael REMY wrote:so it happens again in X9 !? Re: is this sticky bug (.jpeg extension) fixed in psp x9 ?
look,
when i open a .PNG and SAveAs it in .png, PSP does not create another .png file
but when i open a .Jpeg file and SaveAs it in . Jpg (which is also .jif, .jpe too) PSP create a another file with .jpg extension.
At least it should delete the .jpeg original file !
When i work on a network system drive where i am not allowed to created new files (only allow to update) , PSP would bug there in this case.
i just tried with open & saveAs a .jif file, and PSP duplicate it too !!! it created the .jpg version and let the .jif there.
Seriously , PSP does not handle well the multiple extension system for a same file ! : it is a bug.

Here is the result of my experiment:Michael REMY wrote: . . . . .
At least it should delete the .jpeg original file !
Seriously , PSP does not handle well the multiple extension system for a same file ! : it is a bug.
- Started with a .jpg file and SavedAs test1.jpeg, so this is a new .jpeg file.
- Made changes and saved this file (not SaveAs). It saved as test1.jpeg. Closed and reopened this file and the changes were incorporated.
- Made more changes and SavedAs under the same .jpeg name. PSP informed me that the file already exists and do I want to overwrite. Replied yes and it was saved.
- Repeated Save successfully.
There were no files created with the name test1.jpg. I did not experience what you call a bug. It is not clear to me what your expectations are for the program.
My expectation with SaveAs is that if I provide a different name in that process then I am creating a new file and not affecting the original. If I use the same name then I overrwrite. And this is not a PSP issue but a Windows facility that PSP uses as a sub-routine. Whatever Windows program I use I expect the same results whether it's Word or Excel of whatever.

Re: is this sticky bug (.jpeg extension) fixed in psp x9 ?
mark, you are wrong !
no-one open a jpg and save it as a jpeg !
you need to start with a .jpeg !
the problem is when i open the saveAs window dialog, and let the default kind (jpg, jfig, jpeg) selector as it is, psp does not understand that it have to re-use the same extension as the original opened file ! so psp create another file named -.jpg instead of replace the .jpeg !
ps : paint and photoshop did not produce this bug ! only psp did it !
you made the opposite test !- Started with a .jpg file and SavedAs test1.jpeg, so this is a new .jpeg file.

Re: is this sticky bug (.jpeg extension) fixed in psp x9 ?
I tried Marks way as well. But Michael you are missing the point.
Neither Mark nor I had ready access to a jpeg file so we both created them in different ways .
I took three jpg images and just renamed them from .jpg to .jpeg using windows File Explorer.
Mark took a jpg image loaded it in PSP and then saved it using JPG JPEG (*jpg.*jif etc as the Save as type but then changed the file name ending from .jpg to .jpeg
In both cases we finished with jpeg files that we could now test to see if we finished with your problem.
In X8 I load 3 .jpeg files . Mark with a paintbrush dot (so there is a slight change) Then Save as the name saved will be a .jpeg and I get a warning that I am about to overwrite a .jpeg file. Accept .
The other two I marked and then did a Save which brought me back to the Save As dialog box (one of the problems in X8 that they changed the classic form of Save and made it a duplicate of Save As- This was corrected in X9).
In X9 I load 3 .jpeg files . Mark with paintbrush dot. Then Save as - suggested name still has .jpeg as the extension I get a warning about over writing and accept. The other two I completed as Saves and in all cases I did not get a file saved as .jpg - thus no duplicates.
The only way I could get a duplicate file was if I loaded a jpg and then during the save process changed the name extension to .jpeg in which case I got a .jpeg file and the original .jpg file was not over written.
So to repeat I am unable to repeat any series of steps where I start with .jpeg files and finish with both a .jpeg and a .jpg file after Saving or Save As.
This suggests that there may be something wrong with your installation or you are still not explaining the steps you are doing clearly enough.

Re: is this sticky bug (.jpeg extension) fixed in psp x9 ?
Michael - during the tests, as Hartpaul points out I did start with a .jpeg, whether I included the extension in the File name while saving or changed the extension with explorer. All the versions handle this aspect of saving the same way.
I think I understand what you are doing/trying to do. When you invoke SaveAs the name that appears in the File name box includes the extension, for example, "Test-1.jpeg". If I accept that name, just click on the save button, and continue then the .jpeg file is overwritten. No .jpg file created.
However, if when the dialog box comes up I replace "Test-1.jpeg" with "Test-2" then a new "Test-2.jpg" file is created and "Test-1.jpeg" is not changed. If I enter "Test-2.jpeg" in the box then "Test-2.jpeg" is created, no .jpg file is created and "Test-1.jpeg" remains unchanged. Nothing is erased in either case. It appears to me that you are changing the file name when you use SaveAs and not specifying the extension.
As indicated in the "Save as type" line in the dialog box PSP does not differentiate between JPG and JPEG and if an extension is not specified it defaults to .jpg extension. There is a long list of file types available and I can't see PSP providing separate JPG and JPEG types.
If all you want are .jpeg files then you can always include the extension when using SaveAs; or change the extension to .jpeg in explorer.

Re: is this sticky bug (.jpeg extension) fixed in psp x9 ?
i wanted to make a you a video of the problem and i activated the windows explorer showing the extension visualisation.
at this moment i cannot reproduce the bug at all !
it appears the bug only appends when this extension is disabled !
-if you ask to windows explorer to hide the known extension (file type atached to a know installed program) , then PSP do right by replacing the original .jpeg file when you save it as a .jpg
-if you ask to windows explorer to show all the extensions (known & unknow), then PSP bug and create another file .jpg and do not replace the orginal .jpeg one when you ask PSP to save it.
The option to hide/show the extension in the windows explorer is in the folder options/organize :
https://support.microsoft.com/en-ie/hel ... s-explorer
i let you re-test it !(again)

Re: is this sticky bug (.jpeg extension) fixed in psp x9 ?
It is dangerous to have Windows hide known file extensions! One of the known file extensions is, of course, .exe. If you somehow obtain a file called (for example) image_01 but you can't see the extension then you might double-click it and expect it to open in your image editor or viewer. But because you can't see the extension it could actually be named image_01.exe and when double-clicked could execute a virus. One of the rules of computer safety is to know the extension of any file before executing the file.

Something wrong here:
Both the highlighted parts mean the same - in both cases the known extension is not visible. Correction to what you mean please.-if you ask to windows explorer to not show the known extension, then PSP do right by replacing the original .jpeg file when you save it as a .jpg
-if you ask to windows explorer to hide the known extensions, then PSP bug and create another file .jpg and do not replace the orginal .jpeg one when you ask PSP to save it
