Running scanner causes PSP 32 bit to crash

Post by forestraven »

OY, more problems with X9.
In the past, I've always had to use the 32 bit version of PSP if I wanted to use my scanner. Had no problems. Last used X6.
But with X9, when I click the scanner, the Epson software comes up as usual but when I click on it to scan something, X9 crashes. It has done it every time I've tried to use it.
Haven't a clue as to why this is happening.
Anyone else have any ideas?

I've always advised that you run your scanner software outside of PSP.

X6 only came in a 32 bit version. X9, however, comes in both 64 and 32 bit versions, with a recommendation to install both. I suspect you are using the 64 bit version while your scanner software is 32 bit. Most people have found that their TWAIN connection to their scanners will not work under 64 bit PSP. This is not Corel's fault but the scanner makers who have not updated their drivers to 64 bit.

I have three scanners -- 2 Canon and 1 Brother -- and none of them work when I try to use Import > TWAIN Acquire in PSP. This does not, however, crash PSP. I just get an error message.

Instead I use Import > From Scanner or Camera. This brings up a different screen from the TWAIN one, but allows you to scan. So give that a try if you haven't already.

Actually, with all due respect, Ken, the X6 came in both 32 and 64 bit versions. I used it.
And I am also certain that I am using the 32 bit version of X9. I know that the 64 bit never works even though Epson supposedly updated to the 64 bit version.
I usually just use the scanner button located to the right of the file folder symbol. But I've also tried File:Import and get 2 options:
Twain Acquire which produces the same crash.
Twain Source which just chooses which type of Twain I want to use but doesn't actually do anything else.
I tried using your suggestion of going to Import:From Scanner or Camera. It turns out that it works that way. But the scanning software PSP uses is far too limited for my preferences.
So what I've done is reinstalled PSP X6 as well and will just use its 32 bit version to scan.
Thank you for taking time to try to help. Much appreciated!

Dan, thank you for your response as well. If all else fails, that will be another option for me.

Oh dear!  You are quite correct... For some reason I thought the 64 bit versions only started with X7, but I may have been thinking about Video Studio and not PSP (though someone may shoot me down on that one too!!)

Anyway, I just turned on an older computer where I have X6 installed (and yes in both 32 and 64 bit versions  ) and opened the 32 bit version. I tried both the scanner icon next to File and also TWAIN Acquire, but neither could connect to my Brother scanner. (I have Win 10 Creators version on both computers.) I confess I haven't tried the TWAIN route for some years, and probably not since I installed Win 10. I guess that's because I was content enough with the scans from using Import > From Scanner or Camera...

FWIW, I get an identical result using an ancient version of Photoshop CS2 which is most definitely 32 bit. The TWAIN import cannot connect to the scanner, but the alternative WIA route (equivalent to Import > From Scanner or Camera) does.

It's hard to keep up with all the different incarnations and what features they have. :)
This is the first time I've had problems with the 32 bit not scanning. I am using the same computer (8.1) and same scanner that I was using with X6 so can't figure out why X9 is crashing.
You're right that the From Scanner or Camera does work but I need a scanning software that does more than just the bare minimum. I scan artwork I've made as well as documents so I need more control. Epson's scanning software does that.
So, I guess simplest solution is to just use the X6 when I need to scan things.
