Hi MD,
Yes, you are absoutely right.. and XP is a cut above the whole Windows 98 genre. The incidence of inadvertant abuse of .dll files is certainly greatly reduced, having the system files protected in this way..
In elchiki's case there is no certain proof that the existing file is bad.. But because it has been cited as part of the problem... replacement of the file is merely following a process of elimination.. and may not even bring about the desired result. As you point out System File Checker will only restore/replace .dll files to their original configuration. At least this is a known situation... no better or worse than a complete Windows re-install, and the result is a clean non-corrupted version of the suspect file.. Programs sharing the file or its services will still find a file named ntdll.dll in the system32 folder..
I haven't used MF4 yet, but accept that UVS9 is new and is bound to have bugs that need fixes found like any other new program... Some software producers are famous for getting their products de-bugged in the field... to the extent that this practice is accepted as the norm, and you can imagine who they are, I'm sure. This forum does much to get users talking together and often comes up with excellent workarounds... and I like UVS too... I have tried some of the top end editors, but IMHO, UVS seems to be the most user-friendly of them all..
Cheers
George
