Setting framerate in Video Studio x9.5 screencap
Video Studio x9.5 screencap has a menu for setting the capture frame rate - but it always captures at 15 fps, whatever I set it to. I dont think its simply a question of processor speed, because it happens with small low-resolution videos taking up only a small area of the screen, as well as with full screen ones. Does anyone else find this? I did a search and could not find the question had been asked. Is there a way of getting to a faster capture rate (15 fps makes action seem very jerky).
Thanks,
Jim.
Thanks,
Jim.

Re: Setting framerate in Video Studio x9.5 screencap
I have no problem setting to 30fps and capturing from my 1920x1080 full screen.

Re: Setting framerate in Video Studio x9.5 screencap
My X9 screencap allows 3 rates, see image below. Default is 30fps but pick the one you want . . .
May have something to do with the display standard (PAL or NTSC) set in preferences? Mine is PAL, and the preferences all indicate 25fps in properties. Despite that however, these are the properties of the screencap tutorial on the Corel site, which I captured with screencap. And it recorded at 30fps.
So either you have a primary setting at 15fps somewhere that screencap takes, or a data corruption?

Re: Setting framerate in Video Studio x9.5 screencap
Many thanks for your replies. Yes, I have realised that if I set the capture to 25 or 30/sec it APPEARS to capture at those rates. If I use the Windows folder window (as in Davidk's screengrab above) to examine the captured file it says the frame rate is 25 or 30 fps (as set in the capture). However, if I use the MediaInfo tool (from MediaArea.net) it says 15 fps in all cases. Then it gets interesting. If I read the original and the 25 fps captured files into the primary and overlay channels of Video Studio where the preferences are set to 25 fps and I step through them both frame by frame I can see that both have 25 frames in one second. HOWEVER if I compare them frame by frame, I see that the original makes more (and smoother) transitions in a given number of frames than the captured video, which has larger jumps. In other words, it looks as though the capture could in fact be at 15 fps, which is then extrapolated to 25 or 30 fps as the case may be. The Windows folder details picks up the "stated" rate, while Mediainfo picks up the underlying rate (which is in fact correct). This is why capture often appears unacceptably jerky when there is movement. I wonder if anyone agrees.

Hi
Just screen captured using X10 set to 25fps.
MediaInfo reports Frame Rate 15.000fps and Nominal Frame Rate 25.000fps -
while VLC Media Player reports a Frame Rate of 25fps
and X10 itself reports 25.000fps when the WMV file is imported to the timeline.

Re: Setting framerate in Video Studio x9.5 screencap
Hi Jim
If you are comparing frame by frame we should be able to identify any duplicated frames, or dropped frames, assuming the video has movement.
But we need to set the project properties to the same rate as the video, as you are in AU the default rate should be 25fps for Pal.
If you record to 15 fps then the project will add frames to fill the timeline.
If you record to 30fps, the timeline will remove frames, one in five, creates a slight blip, unless we set PP to 30.
Needless to say a 25 fps will play ok on a Pal timeline.
You can see a similar effect if you use Instant Projects, First set your project to Pal 25fps.
Try adding IP-B10 to the timeline, the scrolling film is using 29.97 fps.
Playback in clip mode looks ok, playback in Project mode stutters as the frames are dropped.
Its unfortunate for Pal users as we get NTSC video samples using 29.97 (30)fps.
Not noticeable on most video but IP-B10 and IP-B16 do show a stutter.
There are workrounds to reconstruct the video to use 25fps or tweaking speed timelapse helps.

Re: Setting framerate in Video Studio x9.5 screencap
Hi Trevor
If I understand your last post, VideoStudio Screen Capture always records 15fps then adds frames/duplicates frames to pad the fps to either 25 or 30 as selected by the user; is that correct?

Re: Setting framerate in Video Studio x9.5 screencap
Hi John
No that is not what I was trying to say
The screen capture records correctly to the setting 30, 25 and 15.
I was trying to explain what happens when playing the video on the timeline.
the timeline can only have one frame rate, if we use 25fps project and add a 30fps video then only 25 of those frames will be played
Slight stutter during playback as 5 frames per second are dropped.
If the project is 30fps and wee add a 25fps video then frames will be added, again playback will be poor.
When playing 15fps the playback will be worse as a lot of frames are added.

Re: Setting framerate in Video Studio x9.5 screencap
Hi Trevor
Thanks for the clarification.
The OPs point, I think, is the apparent ambiguity between what VideoStudio screen captures when set to capture at 25fps and the frame rate of the captured file reported by MediaInfo.
My test agreed with the original poster. MediaInfo shows a nominal 25fps and a Frame Rate of 15fps, not 25fps.
GSpot is dark on the fps, which leads me to believe there is a discrepency somewhere.

Re: Setting framerate in Video Studio x9.5 screencap
When I capture at 25 or 30 fps, MediaInfo shows the noinal frame rate as 25 or 30. Nowhere does it show 15fps but does indicate whether the frame rate is variable or constant.
When capturing a Windows Explorer screen it indicate Variable but when I capture a video it shows as Constant

Hi canuck
I captured a part of a Youtube video file.
Was going to compare with a copy of the same file downloaded as a mp4 file unfortunately the download was 29.97fps and the capture was 25fps.
