Problems with "Snap to grid" in PSP X9

Post by Maronius »

Hello everone,

I've got PSP X9 and would like to draw some manual pixel-style art on my graphics. I don't want to pixelate the picture itself (since this could be done with the pixelation effect filter), I want do draw 3x3 size pixels onto the graphic.
So I made this setup:

Gridsize 3x3
Pen-Pixel Size 3
Snap to grid

But this won't lead to my expected behavior, that I can paint similar to a one pixelsize pen on a 1x1 grid. Instead the pen paints overlapping the grid, especially if I'm holding the mouse button to continuously draw.

Am I doing something wrong?

Best regards,
Maronius

Hello,
And how about the Snap to grid option ?
And the settings of the Snap to grid ? This influences the location of the drawing (sorry for my english).

I only know of the "tolerance" setting, but this does not help at all. Are there more snap to grid options?

The pen tool does occassionally have rounding errors. It technically snaps to the middle of a pixel. So on occassion the nodes appear a full pixel off. I don't know why. This makes it very frustrating when trying to join two nodes. THey will refuse to meet up.

When I have snap to grid turned on, and the tolerance set to 3 pixels, it snaps perfectly 99% of the time. only once in a while will one be a single pixel off.

I still don't get it right :-(

This is my setup, and every time i try to draw (green pen) it doesn't snap correctly to the grid ("snap to grid" is on).

Your image doesn't show the nodes. When I see the nodes on my image they snap to the corners of the grid. The stroke does appear off as it expands around the vector line.
example.jpg
Here you can see, the nodes of my square are at half-pixel values. And the stroke width expands from the center of the stroke. So it appears off, the stroke line won't match the grid exactly. For pixel work, turn off the stroke, and use the fill to make the individual pixels. most of the time that should appear close enough to accurate.

Thanks a lot for your answer.
But I guess I used the wrong translation. I'm trying to use the standard brush tool (not the pen).
With the brush I dont have any nodes (or at least I don't know where to make them visible).
Any possiblity to get the brush tool (size 3) working with a 3x3 grid without overpainting the grid lanes?

Paintshop Pro knows nothing about the content of your image. You make a confusion between what YOU see and what you think PSP sees.
To tell PSP where to draw your pixels you need to activate the grid guides and place them where you want. PSP knows about guides.

OK I think I get what you are after.
1. Select Paintbrush tool - Square brush, hardness 100 size 3 pizels and Opacity 100.
2. View > Rulers , View > Guides , View > Snap to Guides, View > Grid Guide and Snap properties and set Current values to say 10 for horizontal and vertical. .
(Whew!! this is something that Corel could change so that all of these are available from the one dialog box and it did not close til you clicked OK, would save a lot of View this View that etc. Would also save space on the View menu drop down.)
3. Now suppose you want your vertical line to line up with x= 5. You will need to drag a vertical guide across to X+ 1= 6. Now when you draw your vertical line within 10 pixels of that guide that line will snap to the guide with an overlap of 1 pixel in this case so that the line runs down X= 5.
Vertical5.jpg
To make other lines you may have to do these on a new transparent layer and also / or move the grid lines to new positions.
Vertical8.jpg
The other thing you might find better is to do away with the snap to guide and just paint using the click first point move to second point and holding shift key down click the second point and have the points joined.
