Is there a way to automatically crop the image and not have the black areas (see attachment) appear after I use the rotate tool on an image?
The straighten tool does this automatically.

There is no such functionality with this tool.
We could make a suggestion to Corel...

Re: Free Rotate in X8
It could probably be scripted. I mean, technically all we need to do is determine the rectangle that won't include any transparent areas and then apply that with the crop tool automatically. And unless I've missed my guess it's a simple affine transform. Wish I had paid more attention in math class.
Just really quick though....why use free rotate? It's a very useful dialog and I do like it but I use it more to rotate things I want to retain their size. Not on something I want to crop. Are you wanting to rotate and crop an individual layer? The black areas should only appear if you have a black background color and the image if the layer is a background layer instead of a raster layer. If it were a regular raster layer the areas would appear transparent not filled in with black.
It seems like you're using the free rotate to straighten an image rather than the straighten tool. Why?

Yes, that is correct. I do use the free rotate instead of the straighten tool sometimes. I find it easier to use it to make minor adjustments than the free rotate.

Re: Free Rotate in X8
If you know the angle you can just type it into the angle on the tool perferences. No need to draw out the line. So it should be about the same level of difficulty as the Free Rotate tool. Or am I missing something? I do that an awful lot.

No you weren't missing anything! I was! That will work perfectly for me. I'll type the angle in the straighten tool and it will work good for me! Thank you so much for pointing that out.
