Videostudio X6 won't startup - STILL WON'T WORK PLEASE HELP
After having to rebuild my system (reformat C: drive and install Windows 7 64bit plus all software) initially V6 was starting up and running.
Now that Windows has installed all windows updates I find that when I attempt to startup VS6 (double click on the desktop icon) I get the normal mouse pointer 'waiting' displayed for 2 or 3 seconds and then nothing - ie VS6 does not startup and appear.
Any ideas?
I also tried running it as 'administrator' but still it won't start up.
Since my original post I have found information about uninstalling to reinstall which I had partly remembered about from a long time ago.
I ran VSPx6_Cleanup and also worked through a document removing certain files/folders and keys in the registry.
I reinstalled VS6 but STILL it will not start - all I get is the 'loading' mouse pointer for a few seconds and then nothing.
I tried running it 'as administrator' and that resulted in a Corel Videostudio Pro has stopped working error.
When I click on 'view details' it lists 'files that help to describe the problem' as follows -
C:\Users\john\AppData\Local\Temp\WERD8C8.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml
C:\Users\john\AppData\Local\Temp\WERDEC2.tmp.appcompat.txt
C:\Users\john\AppData\Local\Temp\WERDF40.tmp.mdmp
I have also found by Googling suggestions to uninstall windows update KB3126587 and KB3126593. I found the first one and uninstalled it but could not find the second one.
Result VS6 will will NOT startup.
Am I flogging a 'dead horse'? Will an upgrade to CS7, 8, 9 or 10 work properly?
One suggestions was to uninstall all windows updates - I find that quite dangerous as most updates are for security and besides VS6 worked before I had to rebuild my syste.
Can anyone tell me what could be the cause.
VX6 was working correctly for the last 2 years until I had to reformat and reinstall Windows 7 Home 64 bit and even then it was working until windows 'caught up with all updates and downloaded and installed them.
Now it just refuses to startup.
I would appreciate help.
Thanks

it's the windows updates that got you this havoc. for X6 fix search the forum for file replacement.
My VS19.2 works fine on 7/64 ... but I hardly update also.

Re: Videostudio X6 won't startup - STILL WON'T WORK PLEASE H
Thanks for the advice.
I was working on my old slow PC and which also has X7 64 bit installed and virtually no windows updates (I set it for NO automatic updates'). I installed V6 and it starts up and runs ok. I was then about to allow windows updates to automatically install and see if I get the same problem but then saw your appreciated reply come it.
I am surprised that (member) lata hasn't entered a reply as he so often has in the past when I have run into problems (not for over 2 years).
So thanks again for your welcome suggestion.
Maybe I will do a 'restore this computer to an earlier point in time' and select the last the point before all the windows updates were installed - oops I just checked I I cannot see or choose a date earlier than today which is very strange.
Maybe I should just UNINSTALL ALL Windows updates what do you think?
BTW what do you mean by "for X6 fix search the forum for file replacement." What should I be searching for as entering "file replacement" didn't seem to find anything.
Also do you know how to change password here? I tried a few times and not matter what I entered as a new password using alpha and numeric characters it would not allow me.
Thanks

You may find what you are looking for here John -- http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 31#p325077
to change your password you need to go to your user control panel - select the profile tab - then 'edit account settings' where you will see the boxes which you must fill in to change your password.
OR - when signing in click 'forgot password' and the system will send you a new one
OR - drop an e-mail to - contactcorelwebboard(a)corel.com saying what you want to change to and one of us will do it for you

Hi John
Not on my pc for a few days so did not reply, a little awkward using a tablet, but knew Brian would give you the link.
Simply replace the helper file with one installed with X6, here C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\video studioX6, I think.
X6 should run ok
More info on the windows updates here

Re: Videostudio X6 won't startup - STILL WON'T WORK PLEASE H
Thanks Brian and Trevor,
I downloaded the dll file and swapped it and it all works now - maybe I had already done that to VS6 before I had to rebuild ny PC. I will keep a copy of that with my other 'help files' for video editing in case I ever need it again (hopefully not).
I also changed my password. I don't know what I was doing wrong before but I kept getting a message that the passord I chose was wrong and needed a space and /or special characters which I also tried unsuccessfully.
Could you please advise if VS7 was the first version to run a 64 bit version? Should I be considering an upgrade to something newer than VS6 if I am happy with VS6 and it fulfills all my needs? Do the 64 bit versions run better (with Windows 7 64 bit)?
Lastly I should have been backing up by library folders as now I have to recreate them (as required). Apart from using SETTINGS>LIBRARY MANAGER EXPORT can the files which contain this data be copied (backed up) and if so where are they stored and what are their names?
Regards

Re: Videostudio X6 won't startup - STILL WON'T WORK PLEASE H
Well I run a 64bit version of VS on this 64 bit machine and a 32 bit on my 32 bit desktop and quite honestly I see no difference in operation speeds between them - just for peace of mind I would always install a 32 bit programme on a 32 bit pc and if I had a 64 bit pc then I would always install a 64 bit programme
if X6 is doing all you need then there is no real point in updating - although if you did upgrade to the latest X10 you would notice quite a few improvements
Libraries - I presume you mean those containing your personal work - not ones like the FX and transitions
the images you see in the libraries are not the actual files - they are simply little thumbnails which contain a link to the actual video file clip/photo - if you RIGHT click on one of the thumbnails you will open a dialogue window where one of the options is "locate on computer" click on that and a file browser window will open showing the file in a folder on your computer
the whole business around the library set up is a bit traumatic - the actual thumbnail created when you add a file to a library (or timeline) is stored in a user .dat file and is not accessible to the user so not easy to get at - and the library save.restore never seems to work the way I expect it - and there are problems using it between versions
MY OWN PERSONAL METHOD OF SAVING AND MOVING LIBRARIES
open VS with a blank timeline - choose the library you want to save - drag all content from the library down into it's correct track in the timeline (audio/video etc)
now go to 'File>>Save and create a .vsp file - call it something sensible - like 'library2015 hols vids' (or whatever)
you can now keep that .vsp safe - and as long as you do not lose the actual real files wherever they may be on your computer you can then at any time re-open that .vsp in a new version of VS (or an existing one) - then just drag the files from the timeline up into a new or existing library panel

To upgrade or not? only you can decide by the type of your work. For the average Joe working in HD, nothing is inspiring beyond X8. Only minor issues are fixed, most bugs still around, new added and bunch of useless tools also.
I'm sticking to 19.2 for the time being, and maybe reinstall X7 also.

Re: Videostudio X6 won't startup - STILL WON'T WORK PLEASE H
Thanks Brian and asik1,
The main reason I asked should I be upgrading was because VS6 requires the modified .dll file (or uninstalling windows updates) to run and also is only 32 bit software. Nothing to do with functionality or features as I am sure later versions have more features. I only use HD not X4 (ultra high definition) which VS6 handles.
Yes by libraries I mean personal ones created within VS6 which you add video, stills and audio files to and yes I realise that they are only thumbnails which 'point' to the relevant files but they (I think) are the only way to add things to the timeline and if you don't have them backed up and have to reinstall they need to be recreated (I think).
Thanks again. I can now carry on with the projects I had started. Thankfully I store my projects (.vsp files) and video, image and audio files on a different disk from where VS6 is installed.

Re: Videostudio X6 won't startup - STILL WON'T WORK PLEASE H
Hi John
When I start a project the first thing I do is import the video files from my camcorder to my PC.
There are several ways to do that, whatever way you choose.
The files are saved to a folder having a meaningful name, that folder will be designated as my working folder for that project.
Now I insert the clips to Video Studio, I can insert to the library, in which case I will create a new library page.
Or insert directly to the timeline. I simply right click the timeline or library for Insert Video, browse for my files.
With the clips on the timeline I can Save As, giving it a name as “All Holiday Clips”.
Resave to give it a new name, “Edit Holiday Clips” a project to edit.
Anyway lots of options to save your work without using the library, but then it is a convenient place to hold your clips.

Thanks Trevor,
I wasn't aware that you could insert video clips or any other clips into the timeline without first placing them in a library folder.
I always create separate library folders for each project I create and name them accordingly. I have got used to that way and feel comfortable with that.
Anyway thanks for the advice.
