Please help me. Getting discouraged and aggravated

Post by gagejennifer »

I bought the PSP X9 . However installing the plugins I'd like to have is becoming a bit more challenging than I anticipated. I know there are dll and other files I need for the program. But I have no idea where to put them exactly in the System32 folder (or whatever the folder's name is) And none of the plugins I want to install are going in correctly. With the exception of two. I know how to set the file preferences etc in it. But I didn't anticipate it being this hard to get all the plugins in the right folders this time. I know I've posted a questiion that has probably been answered here in the forum. I just couldn't find it. I'd also hate to think I've wasted my money. I'm running the program on a laptop that has Windows 10 in it. I just don't know what to do to get these plugins installed correctly. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It would help if we knew some of the plugins you are trying to install that are giving you issues. For the most part, if there is an actual installation procedure for the plugin then you run the installation/setup file and, when prompted, select where you want the plugin to install. In PSP that would be in the Corel Plugins>EN folder, just making sure that 64 bit plugins are installed in that folder under Program Files and 32 bit plugins are installed in that folder in Program X86 Files.

Some plugins, particularly older 32 bit plugins, simply require that you copy the 8bf files into a folder and don't have an install process. In that case simply create a folder with the name of the plugin under the Plugins>EN folder and put those files in the folder.

There are some older 32 bit files that require specific dll's that might not already be present. If you have those DLLs (which I believe are available at The Plugin Site) they go in the Windows>System 32 folder.

Thank you JoeB for your reply. I just got the program and I'm starting from scratch basically. I did find a page that had a lot of pugin links to click on to install them. I"ll have to look again at which page it was. But plugins like VM Natural Sparkle I used regularly. I even tried the cut / paste method into a Plugin folder I created on my own. That didn't seem to work. I went back and I think I have the .dll files installed correctly. At this point I'm not sure if I did that right nor not either. I've never had this much trouble before installing plugins. I have the 64 bit version. Its just getting discouraging and I'm honestly hoping I haven't wasted my money. I'm sure its probably something I'm not doing or something I'm missing. What i'm not sure. I have even gone so far as to uninstall and reinstall the Paint Shop program. So I don't know where to go from here honestly. Thank you again for all the help

Now another problem I"m encountering is this. I created a Plugin folder for PSP 9X. I've even got Winzip in the computer. I tried to install another plugin. But even though the folder shows up when you look in the Corel folder and so does the plugin itself (vm natural) I opened PSP and neither the plugin folder or the plugin itself show up. I also thought I installed the plugin right. I just don't know what to do. :-( getting very discouraged now.

Can you do some cropped screen shots of your folders showing the name of the folder the path and the files in the folder. That may help give some clues.
Also the plugins that work.
As well can you name more of the plugins so that others can see if they have the same and have them working in PSP X9. That way they may be able to provide help on how or what they did to get them to work.

Each time you install a plugin it creates its own folder. Usually in the Programs File folder or the Program Files (86x) folder.
Do a manual search in your folders and note where they are installed.

In PSP go to File. Open Preferences. Then File Locations.
Make sure Plug-ins is highlighted in the left 'File Types' menu.
Then click on Add.
Navigate to the folder that you noted above.
You only need to click on the folder. Not the actual 'correct' plug-in file. ie for Topaz plug-ins you only need to highlight the Topaz Labs/Topaz Detail 3 folder.
Make sure Enable and Use sub folders are checked.
Click OK.
Close PSP. Then open PSP and see if the Plug-ins are listed under Effects/Plug-ins.

Some folks start up special folder and move all their plug-ins to it. I find it much easier to leave the files where the installation places them.

good luck.

When you first install PSP, the recommended installation is to install both the 32 bit and 64 bit version of the program. You have only installed the 64 bit version. In that case, only 64 bit plug-ins will work with it. 32 bit plug-ins, even when installed correctly as outlined by brucet, won't even be listed in PSP under Effects > Plugins.

So if you have a lot of 32 bit plug-ins, I suggest you reinstall PSP and this time install both the 32 and 64 bit versions.

Thank you gagejennifer for mentioning the VM Natural Sparkle filter that you were having trouble with. I have been able to get that working in PSP X9 32 bit version with Windows 10.

The operation involved using Filters Unlimited 2.0
There is a fee Beginners workshop that you can do and at project 61 it describes how to install and use Filters Unlimited.
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=52821

Another source of information on installing plugins (although a bit convoluted) is
http://www.paintshopprotutorials.co.uk/ ... .html#DLLL

I used the file locations to point to My Filters Unlimited which I had placed in my Documents folder.
Using Effects > Plugins > I.C.NET Software > Filters Unlimited 2.0
I was able to get the Filters Unlimited dialog box open and then Click on Import.
I directed that to a Desktop folder Unzip, where I unzip zip files (scan them for viruses) . The file there was sparkle.8bf.
Once that was imported it was then active as one of the filters under the Filters Unlimited 2.0 group.

hartpaul -- is there a Natural Sparkle which comes in 64 bit? I note that you got it to work in 32 bit PSP. But since gagejennifer only seems to have installed the 64 bit version of PSP, I can only repeat that she needs to install both the 32 and 64 bit versions of PSP if she wants these sorts of plug-ins to work.

This is the page I got the Sparkle filters from.
http://punkinstuff.tripod.com/

I get the feeling these filters including the Filters Unlimited are very old which means that they are probably all 32 bit.
So as you suggested users need to install the recommended 32 and 64 bit versions of PSP

As others have now pointed out, I made one serious omission in my post, and that was to point out to the OP that 32 bit plugins will not work with 64bit PSP and vice versa. I hope the OP takes note of this fact pointed out by others!

Thank you again everyone for helping with this. Im sorry to be such a bother. I still don't know exactly where in the System 32 folder to put these dll files. Also I tried to unzip the files to certain folders and for whatever reason that's not working either. The files just won't extract to the folders. I don't know why or what I'm doing wrong there either. Also I'm starting to wonder if the dll files I do have are bad since they're not working either. So where is a good site to get the right files from And where exactly do the files go?.

For unzipping files I usually just open up the two folders 1- the destination folder and 2- The folder containing my zip file which can also be 1.
I right click the zip file and the context menu has the option to Extract here.
Thats it.
I did not copy or move any other dll files so they may not be needed unless they were there before I upgraded to Windows 10. What is the name attached to these .dll files so I can check?

I did notice after installing the PSP program 2 icons for it on the desktop . I still don't know the right place to put the dll files in. I know that in order for the plugins to work you need to put these files (including the mscrvt file. I think that's what it's called) I just put these files in the system 32 folder where I thought they went. But as I said I'm wondering if they were bad files. Not quite sure where to get the right files or where to put them. This has definitely been more than I anticipated. I've never had this problem before. I'm sure it's something I'm not doing or not putting in the right place.

One icon has a small 32 below it. That is the 32 bit version and it is the one you should open to use most of your plugins. The other one is used for 64 bit plugins such as the Particleshop.
